Notes

Unity and meaning: "I felt no need to express this feeling and knowledge to those I encountered. I sensed that my friends were aware of something special happening inside and through me. Prior to this community event, I had recently completed reading The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran. While reading the book, at once I felt truth unfolding itself to me and an internal validation of its authenticity and validity. During my mystical experience, I recall a cognitive awareness that the reading had prepared me for the experience. Somehow7, it felt as though the reading had been a precursor to mystical experience at the block party. So as I jumped up and down to the music, then mingled among the crowd, I sensed a unity of being one with the Spirit of God and those around me. "[1]

Timothy Leary reports several LSD induced Unity Experiences. "I was delighted to see that my skin was dissolving in tiny particles and floating away. I felt as though my outer shell was disintegrating, and the 'essence' of me was being liberated to join the 'essence' of everything else about me." [2]

Michael Harner describes a unity experience, coupled with an Activation Experience of absorbing spiritual power in the form of the energies of the horse and bison, he had, while isolated alone in a cave.

"Then, as I was sitting there, an immense indescribable power rushed toward me from the same direction that the herds had come. But this time, there was no sound, no warning. It swept overwhelmingly through my body like a freight train. A surge of immense energy filled my body. I was astonished. The power had come! Then the animal was gone.

As it bounded soundlessly away through the darkness beyond the recesses of the cave, it called back to me: “I am XXX, XXX, XXX!” It said, “I am one and all. You and I are one.” Then there was only silence.

I felt indescribable awe and gratitude." [3]
