Intellectual Order

In August Comte's theory of social formation, the Intellectual Order is the positive, non-theological worldview that supplies society with a single, coherent way of knowing, essential for achieving unity and progress in society.

Notes

In the Preface to Catechism, Comte puts his Positive Philosophy forward as candidate for the Intellectual Order when he says that Positive Philosophy “has shown itself able to suggest the most systematic theory of moral and social order,” and that the servants of Humanity “come forward to claim as their due the general direction of this world.”[1] This direction presupposes a unified doctrine, built from the hierarchy of the positive sciences and culminating in sociology.

Core functions

Unification of knowledge. The hierarchy of sciences (math → astronomy → physics → chemistry → biology → sociology) gives an ordered, encyclopedic view that replaces theological/metaphysical dispersion with scientific unity.[2]

Subjective [human] unity. Once theology and metaphysics are set aside, West and East “must look elsewhere for a systematic basis on which to rest their intellectual and moral communion,” i.e. in Positivism’s human, subjective synthesis.[3]

Authorization of doctrine. The positive priesthood “must… lay down in regard to [the different social functions] such rules as may maintain and develop the general harmony,” but without doing the detailed execution.[4]

Service to Humanity. In Conversation VIII Comte says the priesthood “discloses to us, step by step, the order of the world, its material, social, and moral order,” which makes knowledge explicitly serve the Great Being.[5]

Transmission through education. Because women and the proletariat complete “the admirable system of human providence,” the intellectual order must be made popular and pedagogical, not esoteric.[6]

SpiritWiki note: Intellectual Order is equivalent to the Ethical Framework + Metaphysical Framework a Human Development Framework. It tells people what is real, how it develops, and why Humanity is the final object of service.
