"Prior to the coming of the Europeans, nowhere in Indian America was tobacco employed for anything but sham.anistic and religious purposes. In South America, especially, the shamans of several indigenous societies still use it as an ecstatic intoxicant, alone, as among the Warao, or in combination with other psychotomimetic species."
