Defence Mechanisms are cognitive and behavioural operations of the Physical Unit that are selected and reinforced by evolutionary processes because of their direct or indirect contribution to the defence and survival of the Physical Unit. Defence mechanisms are designed to help the physical unit avoid and alleviate pain, either through direct behavioural action or through subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) cognitive and emotional operations.
