Punishment

From The SpiritWiki

Punishment is self-justified violence perpetrated against another living being. Justification for violence include revenge and "justice." Justifications for revenge and justice range everywhere from the purely religious (i.e. suggesting that God supports punishment) to the purely existential and even instrumental.

Punishment should be clearly distinguished from Atonement. It is proper and spiritually aligned to expect people to atone for their sins, it is spiritually improper and out of alignment to perpetrate violence on another living being, not matter how "justified" one may feel.
