From The SpiritWiki

The term Gender refers to the social and psychological characteristics generally ascribed to individuals of different sex . Gender is different than sex in the sense that the sex of an individual refers to their biological endowments, while gender refers to the socially constructed expectations that we place upon individuals of different sex. For an excellent explanation of the difference between sex and gender, see the WikiBook, Introduction to Sociology/Gender
