Hero

Erich Fromm

Erich Fromm identifies two version of the Hero archetype: the hero of having and the hero of being.

The hero of having is the conqueror, the accumulator, the dominator. This figure uses force and seeks power. This one wants to rule, and measures worth by what they can extract and possess. They are the traditional epic hero, the narcissistic figure who masters others and treats the world as property to be seized. For Fromm, this is the hero of a culture choking on selfishness, the embodiment of the nonproductive orientations—exploitation, hoarding, and marketing—where life is reduced to acquisition.

The hero of being is the giver, the sharer, the lover. This figure renounces force, refuses domination, and wants nothing. Fromm finds this type in Jesus, read not as a theological absolute but as a structural image of human flourishing: a person who "gave his [sic] life out of love for his [sic] fellow [sic] creatures," who "did not use force, who did not want to rule, who did not want to have anything" (Fromm, To Have or to Be?). The hero of being appeals through love and presence rather than power. They represent the productive orientation and the biophilous ideal: life that affirms growth, relatedness, and presence. Where the hero of having takes, the hero of being gives; where the one dominates, the other shares.
