Notes

Discernment is a mental and emotional practice that draws on the full facilities of the Physical Unit. In particular, both left and right brain functions are implicated in a successful discernment process. The quality of discernment is a function of the health of the physical unit, the balanced development of the brain (i.e. left and right hemispheres), education, instruction in technique, and practice.

Because of the fragmented and antagonistic nature of reality on this earth, it is important to develop the critical skill of discernment, especially when dealing with topics of a spiritual, political, economic, or social nature. Properly discerning Truth from fiction, lie, and intentional attempts to deceive can make the difference between successful spiritual awakening and death.

When it comes to spirituality and spiritual truths, individuals may use Discernment Red Flags to help identify valid from invalid information streams, and authentic from inauthentic spirituality.

Discernment is an important topic and discussions of its importance appear in spiritual monologue and dialogue throughout recorded history. For example, the Vivekachudamani of Adi Shankara is an 8th-century Hindu poem that provides an extended, of somewhat laborious, discourse on the significance and practice of discernment.
