Georg Luck

"The idea that drugs played a role in the great religions of antiquity as they do in tribal societies in Africa and South America is still abhorrent to many scholars today. Perhaps they are willing to admit it for ancient Egypt – but for Greece? For Athens? For the Eleusinian Mysteries? For Ancient Israel? And yet the evidence is strong. Psychoactive substances reached the brains of the believers in many different ways: in food and drink, in oil rubbed into the skin, in smoke inhaled. We should not underestimate the experiences of the priests in this area (Luck, 1985/ 2006).[1]
