The Mindset

The Mindset is Douglas Rushkoff's term for the technocratic worldview of the global elite and their conviction that wealth and technology can always outrun consequence.[1] Its articles of faith include statements like every problem is an engineering problem; externalities are someone else's problem; and if things go wrong, the correct response is not to repair the commons but to exit it (to Mars, to the metaverse, to a well-appointed bunker). The Mindset treats society as a platform to be optimized rather than a relationship to be maintained. Ironically, as Rushkoff notes, it is precisely this secessionist logic that helps bring about The Event it seeks to escape. The doom loop, one might say, is a feature, not a bug.
