Notes
- Choice is never unconstrained. The options a self perceives, values, and selects from are drawn from the material, relational, and cultural environments that surround it. A child cannot aspire to what it has never encountered; a worker cannot demand conditions that no workplace in their society provides; a culture cannot supply identities it has not imagined.
- This principle raises political, economic, and sociological questions:
- What is made available? Which identities, roles, aspirations, and opportunities does a given context supply to the selves embedded within it?
- What is withheld? Which options are absent, hidden, stigmatized, or structurally inaccessible — and what does their absence cost the self?
- Who decides? Availability is not natural or neutral. It is produced: by economic arrangements, by political power, by cultural gatekeepers, by the design of the built environment, by the distribution of resources within families and communities.
- Two important corollaries follow:
- Perceived availability and actual availability are not the same. A self may not perceive options that in fact exist, and may perceive options that are in fact closed to it. Ideology, propaganda, and socialization shape what appears choosable.
- Harm constrains availability. When a circle of relation harms the self, the self withdraws and forms boundaries for protective reasons. The resulting disconnection narrows what the self experiences as available — a contraction that persists until the harm is addressed. See Circle of Self.
- The question of availability of choice connects the Circle of Self directly to sociology, economics, and political science: these disciplines study precisely how options are produced, distributed, and restricted across populations. A full account of self formation must therefore attend not only to psychology — how the self develops — but to the structure of the context — what the self is permitted to develop toward.
