Enabling Context
The Enabling Context is the total environment — natural, built, relational, and cultural — that surrounds and shapes the developing Bodily Ego or little "s" self. Enabling context performs the dual function of limiting what the bodily ego can do and enabling (or disabling) what it can become.

Notes
- Every context limits and enables. The environment sets boundaries on what the self can experience and do: the child's world is bounded by the home, the neighborhood, the school, the values of the family and culture. At the same time, the environment enables: it makes certain developmental outcomes, capacities, choices, and ways of being possible in the first place. Language, attachment, aspiration, skill, identity — none of these emerge from nowhere. Each is drawn from, and supported by, the context in which the self develops.
- A simple way to state the principle: no capacity, aspiration, or behavior can emerge from a context that does not support it. A self cannot develop what its context does not make available.
- The enabling context has at least four components:
- The material context — the body, the natural environment, and the built environment (homes, roads, schools, workplaces). This is what exists at the beginning of life, before any ego has formed.
- The relational context — the concentric circles of relation (primary caregivers, extended family, community, friends, school, leisure, work) through which the self is progressively formed. See Circle of Self.
- The motivational context — the biologically rooted push (instincts, needs) and the culturally rooted pull (norms, values, aspirations, symbols, narratives) that animate the self's movement through its circles.
- The cultural context — the norms, values, symbols, narratives, art, and music a culture deploys, which supply the raw materials of identity and aspiration.
- The concept of the enabling context is closely tied to the question of Availability of Choice: because the self can only choose from what its context makes available, analyzing the enabling context is the first step in understanding what selves in a given time and place can become — and what they cannot.
