It is perhaps unnecessary to say that the concept of ego is often misunderstood in spiritual, religious, esoteric, and even scientific terms. From admonitions that we "destroy" the bodily ego (eastern mystical traditions) to the lopsided development of the left half of the brain in western K12 curriculum into a linear, left brain "monster ego" (that is often severely damaged), misapprehension, misconception, and mishandling of the ego (an in particular the bodily ego) are the heart of The Problem. Thus, straightening out our conception of the bodily and spiritual ego are of critical importance for almost all scholarly disciplines.
