Handsome Lake (1735-1815) Born in the Seneca village of Conawaga, Handsome Lake, a member of the Turtle clan, and one of the noble hoya'nê`families, was a Seneca who, after a series of visions, provided the "Gai'wiio" (guy we you) or "Good Message" to a Seneca nation devasted by centuries of contact with white European colonizers.
