* Fromm explicitly warns against confusing productiveness with "activity" in the modern sense. Fromm argues that "activity" frequently masks anxiety, automaton conformity, or submissive dependence on authority. A person may be frantically busy yet entirely unproductive.
* Productive activity does not require the production of tangible objects or marketable goods; one can think, feel, and perceive productively without creating anything externally visible. It is an attitude, a process of self-realization and self-expression, not an output.
* In the productive orientation, power is experienced as "power to" (capacity) rather than "power over" (domination); the latter is a perversion that arises from impotence and reinforces it.
* The productive orientation is the ethical ideal of [[Humanistic Ethics]] and the therapeutic goal of [[Humanistic Psychoanalysis]] it corresponds to what Fromm calls the "fully born" human being.
