==Notes==

Governance rituals transform raw power into rightful authority. A coronation does not make someone king in fact; it makes them king in the eyes of the community.<ref>Max Weber, The Sociology of Religion (Boston: Beacon Press, 1963).</ref> Rappaport's concept of the liturgical order makes the mechanism precise: performing the ritual is not a report about the rules, it is obedience. The pledge, the oath, the catechism install the rule-set inside the person. Durkheim saw this nomic function as religion's defining social role: religion as the maintenance of the existing moral order.<ref>Emile Durkheim, The Elementary Forms of Religious Life (New York: Free Press, 1995 [1912]); Roy Rappaport, Ritual and Religion in the Making of Humanity (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1999); "nomic" function via Stephen Sharot, A Comparative Sociology of World Religions: Virtuosos, Priests, and Popular Religion (New York: New York University Press, 2001).</ref>

The mechanics of governance ritual are visible wherever hierarchy is staged: the elevated courtroom bench, robe, and gavel; the coronation regalia; the graduated chairs of the Masonic lodge (Junior Warden, Senior Warden, Worshipful Master); the choreography of graduation and the donning of the robe; the peer-review process with its gatekeeping and sanctions.<ref>Daryl E. Chubin and Edward J. Hackett, Peerless Science: Peer Review and U.S. Science Policy (Albany: State University of New York Press, 1990).</ref> Governance rituals also operate punitively — the shaming editorial, the excommunication, the heresy trial — as the Sheldrake affair illustrates: when the editor of Nature asked "a book for burning?", the establishment reached for the ritual tools of the Inquisition.<ref>Anthony Freeman, "The Sense of Being Glared At: What Is It Like to Be a Heretic?," Journal of Consciousness Studies 12, no. 6 (2005): 4–9.</ref>

Because governance rituals are the rituals of rule, they are the type most readily bent to non-essential needs: the Emperor's need for legitimation (Ardashir's Zoroastrianism, Constantine's Christianity), the accumulating class's need for compliant populations.
