In the Lightning Path framework, effervescence is the emotional product that Ritual exists to generate and reproduce — and, therefore, the resource that whoever organizes the ritual is positioned to harvest. "It is not difficult to imagine that a man in such a state of exaltation should no longer know himself. Feeling possessed and led on by some sort of external power that makes him think and act differently than he normally does, he naturally feels he is no longer himself. It seems to him that he has become a new being." The feeling of an overwhelming power is real as an experience; what is mistaken is only its attribution: "the god of the clan, the totemic principle, can be none other than the clan itself, but the clan transfigured and imagined in the physical form of the plant or animal that serves as totem."

The concept is explanatory, not merely descriptive. It explains the origin of the sacred — "it is in these effervescent social milieux, and indeed from that very effervescence, that the religious idea seems to have been born" — and the origin of the felt force itself: "That force thus becomes an integral part of our being and, by the same stroke, uplifts it and brings it to maturity." The phenomenon is general, not confined to tribal religion: in revolutionary epochs "man himself becomes something other than what he was," and "we see the most mediocre or harmless bourgeois transformed by the general exaltation into a hero or an executioner."

The lineage runs from Durkheim through Goffman's interaction ritual to Collins's formal model, where effervescence is one outcome of four ingredients (bodily co-presence, barriers to outsiders, mutual focus of attention, shared mood), with "emotional energy" as its portable residue — the mechanism the three ritual types (Identity Ritual, Governance Ritual, Exchange Ritual) typologize by function. Collins's rendering also makes the dependency explicit: ritual is the technology, effervescence the product — a priority Durkheim states in his own idiom, since the effervescent assembly is the origin from which rites attempt to recapture the force.

The Erasure of the Accumulating Class
The defect of the Durkheim–Collins model is that it has actors but no owners. The "society" whose force wells up in effervescence is a moral community treated as unitary, and Durkheim actively resists reducing that community to class interest. The result is a theory of ritual with no slot for the questions a critical framework must ask: Who built the venue? Who set the ticket price? Who wrote the liturgy? Who profits from the allegiance produced? Collins inherits the blind spot — interaction rituals are analyzed as egalitarian micro-situations, and the analysis stops at the arena wall. Who owns the arena is not part of the model. The Accumulating Class is analytically absent.

The empirical cases make the erasure visible:

* Religion: rituals organized by clerical hierarchies historically fused with throne — the altar-and-crown complex. Even where the theology is consolation, canon, scheduling, and the appointment of officiants are governance decisions made above the congregation. Marx's point made as mechanism: the ritual apparatus is owned.
* Sport: the purest case. Taxpayer-financed stadiums, billionaire franchise owners, public subsidies for private effervescence factories. The fan's devotion is genuine; the harvest of that devotion — ticket revenue, broadcast rights, municipal bonds, identity itself ("our team") — flows upward. Juvenal saw it in Rome: panem et circenses is a governance ritual with an exchange component attached.
* Music: ticketed performance is a bourgeois institution centuries old, but what is historically new is vertical integration — Live Nation/Ticketmaster's control of large-venue ticketing and promotion (the U.S. Department of Justice filed its antitrust suit in 2024), VIP tiering, dynamic pricing, the festival economy, and the conversion of artists into brand platforms transmitting consecrated cultural capital across generations.

Two Necessary Cautions
First, the critique must not imply that effervescence is fake. That is the error Adorno and Horkheimer made: because the culture industry manufactures the occasion, they concluded the collectivity is pseudo and the pleasure deluded — empirically wrong (commercial concerts produce measurable effervescence) and strategically self-defeating, since it condescends to participants. The sharper point is that the effervescence is real, and that is exactly what makes ritual such efficient extraction infrastructure. The harvest works because the experience is authentic: fans really are bonded; the bond is really manufactured at scale; the manufactured bond is really monetized. All three things are true, and the middle one is invisible to Durkheim.

Second, elite organization is a variable, not a constant. A single langar — volunteer-run, redistribution downward, organized by the congregation it serves — refutes any blanket claim that all rituals are elite-run. The Lightning Path distinction between essential and non-essential needs handles this: the same ritual type can be organized from below (essential needs — belonging, support, healing) or from above (non-essential needs — legitimation, compliance, accumulation). See Authentic Religion and Seven Essential Needs. This permits the same institution to be analyzed ambidextrously: a service is simultaneously identity ritual for the congregation and, at the level of the megachurch pastor's jet, extraction.

The Missing Variable
The amendment can be stated in one sentence: Durkheim and Collins ask what rituals do to participants; a critical framework asks who organizes the ritual and whose needs it serves. That single variable converts effervescence theory into an account of rituals as Mechanisms of Reproduction: rituals reproduce the Mode of Reproduction and, through it, the Regime of Accumulation, precisely because the solidarity they generate is a harvestable resource — and whoever controls the ritual controls the harvest. See Conceptive Ideologists and Boundary Fetish.
