Notes
Grof, after Jung and Otto, note that connection experiences often have the quality of Numinosity

The LP identifies several different Connection Experience Types and many different Connection Outcomes (see below). We also recommend analyzing Connection Experience along five Connection Axes.

Many consider Connection Experience to be the core of human spirituality, at the authentic root of every religion.
Ralph Waldo Emerson suggests "Every where the history of religion betrays a tendency to enthusiasm. The rapture of the Moravian and Quietist; the opening of the Internal sense of the Word, in the language of the New Jerusalem Church; the revival of the Calvinistic churches; the experiences of the Methodists, are varying forms of that shudder of awe and delight with which the individual soul always mingles with the universal soul."

R. A. Naulty: R. A. Naulty says "...there [is] something wonderful and powerful about them [connection experiences]" which places them beyond ordinary experience."

There is an issue with Nomenclature Confusion, many different names for the same experience. Linda Bourque and Kurt Back note there is "descriptive coincidence" between different types of transcendent/"aesthetic" and drug experiences and wonders if this "indicates there may be a complex of phenomena derived from different conditions which have a common expression and which may have a common function in human action."

Shear notes that there is considerable congruence between the connection experiences reported in various cultures and traditions concluding "we now, I think, have good reason to think that these experiential accounts reflect congruent experiences."

Connection experiences may be positive (i.e. zenith experiences) or negative (i.e. nadir experiences). Whether or not a connection experience is a zenith experience or a nadir experience depends in large measure on how the individual receives the revelation/expansion/insight from the experience. Even very glorious truths and insights can be experienced with terror if the physical unit is unprepared or if the thinking processes have been corrupted by indoctrination and Toxic Socialization.

Dreams can be connection events. "It is not denied...that a divine influx could take place in dreams..." (Jung, 1938: 22)

The Q-Scale may be used to estimate the intensity and quality of a connection event.

A connection event may occur spontaneously under conditions of relaxation and deep contentment. R. M. Bucke: "His mind...was calm and peaceful. He was in a state of quiet, almost passive enjoyment. All at once, without warning of any kind, he found himself wrapped around as it were by a flame-colored cloud."

A connection experience may be facilitated via Connection Technique, possibly with the help of a Connection Appliance, and often by exploiting naturally occurring Connection Supplements.

Connection Experiences can bring profound Healing and Transformation. As Grof notes, connection experiences (he calls them Holotropic States can, if correctly understood and supported, "have an extraordinary healing, transformative, and even evolutionary potential."

Connection experiences may be understood neurologically, as what occurs when the Default Mode Network (otherwise known as the Bodily Ego of the individual's brain releases control and allows Consciousness to flow into the Physical Unit (Sosteric, SOA1). Release may occur naturally, under conditions of aligned safety, or it can be forced by exploiting powerful Connection Supplements.

TRIGGERS (old research) Hood provides a classification of triggers to mystical experience, including natural triggers (all aspects of nature), sexual triggers (sexual intercourse, note he restricts this to "heterosexual" intercourse), drug triggers, religious triggers (religious settings and religious activities, rituals, and prayer).

Triggers see Laski for additional conceptualization of triggers.

Hood notes that Self Actualized individuals are more likely to have a connection experience.

Taylor provides a list of triggers that include psychological turmoil (23.6%), nature (18%, meditation (13%) and watching or listening to arts performance (dance, music, play (13%). Notes the majority of triggers are NOT spiritual or religion (only 21.7% in his sample),and over 78% were spontaneous. Only 8% noted a felt encounter with God<blockquote>Nevertheless, the high incidence of 'spontaneous awakening experiences' strongly discredits the view that awakening experiences are only valid in a religious context. Surely awakening experiences become religious by virtue of post-experiential interpretation, through a conceptual application of a religious interpretation to a non-conceptual experience. As a consequence, the inclusion of such experiences under the umbrella term of 'religious experiences' (e.g., by Alister Hardy and the Religious Experience Unit) is surely misleading and inappropriate.</blockquote>

Causes
Neurological/Biological

Leary: "those aspects of the psychedelic experience which subjects report to be ineffable and ecstatically religious involve a direct awareness of the processes which physicists and biochemists and neurologists measure.". Also "We considered the hypothesis that the human being might
be able to become directly aware of energy exchanges and biological processes for which we now have no language and no perceptual training."

Incidence
67% of psychotherapists surveyed indicated having seen at least one client during a twelve month period who had reported a Connection Experience.

Sosteric suggests connection experiences are a ubiquitious feature of human existence and that they occur naturally in healthy individuals.

As researchers have found, a remarkably high number of scholars identify themselves as having spiritual orientations and aspirations.

Bart Ehrman mentions his "born again" experience, which occurs after "asking Jesus into my heart...
As noted in the BOTHA, in the World card, the meniscus that surrounds the Earth represents a Creation Template. The creation template forms the ground upon which we create physical reality. The twenty-four figures represent the rainbow spectrum of humanity creating the World while “standing” on the archetypal structure provided by the creation template. The planet in the middle is the result of the creation template materialized through the hands of the people of the world.

Noting that most people can't avail themselves of expensive psychoanalysis, Abraham Maslow suggested that "...we must turn our attention more and more to mass techniques of helping the person to discover this precious human nature deep within himself-this, nature that he is afraid of expressing." The Lightning Path is designed to be such a "mass technique."

The expansion of Consciousness into the body and the provision of a "technology" to facilitate a "Consciousness Revolution" as Lazlo, Grof, Russell (1999) call it, has been a long-standing concern of philosophers, scientists, gurus, prophets, and saviours alike, for at least ten thousand years, probably more. Folks usually get interested after some kind of Connection Event leads to some Connection Outcome that causes them to question their "position" on things, sometime to the point of defining, altering, or transforming one's perspectives and even life's work. For example, Synchronicity, Active Imagination, and Dream Events all played a role in pushing C. G. Jung towards an examination of "occultism" and the spiritual side of life

According to Shear, the PP consists of three things, these being:

# The phenomenal world is the manifestation of a transcendental, ground
# Human beings are capable of attaining immediate knowledge of that ground
#In addition to their phenomenal egos, human beings possess a Transcendental Self which is of the same or like nature with that transcendental ground."

Sheer suggests that Connection Experiencess provdie prima facie support for these theses and that mystical experiences provide prima facie evidence that [Ontological Naturalism]] is false.

According to Huxley, generally, the PP consists of:

: a metaphysics that "recognizes a divine Reality substantial to the world of things and lives and minds."
: a psychology that "finds in the soul something similar to, or even identical with, divine Reality.
: an ethic that suggests "man’s final end in the knowledge of the immanent and transcendent Ground of all being."

The PP is Huxley's term for what we call Is an:: Authentic Spirituality, which as noted in Rocket Scientists' Guide to Authentic Spirituality (Sosteric, 2018h), is spirituality that connects.

Huxley suggests, the "Rudiments of the Perennial Philosophy may be found among the traditionary lore of primitive peoples in every region of the world, and in its fully developed forms it has a place in every one of the higher religions."

However, I would absolutely disagree that the PP finds its "fully developed" form in traditional religion. In fact, because of the revolutionary potential of authentic Connection Experience, traditional religions are attempts to obscure and sanitize the core elements of the PP to make actual Connection harder to accomplish.

Huxley recognizes the importance of Alignment without which the potentialities of the human mind may not be actuated. "In the ordinary circumstances of average sensual life these potentialities of the mind remain latent and unmanifested. If we would realize them, we must fulfil certain conditions and obey certain rules, which experience has shown empirically to be valid." or "ultimate Reality is not clearly and immediately apprehended, except by those who have made themselves loving, pure in heart and poor in spirit."

Huxley terms those who achieve Connection and apprehend Reality saints, prophets, sages, or enlightened ones.

<blockquote class="definition">Formation (a.k.a. yin) is the cradling, cuddling, enveloping, encircling enfolding, ordering, and guiding Aspect of Consciousness. Formation, what physicists might call inertia, is the primary shaper of physical creation. Formation is what modifies, shapes, and controls force so that force can actually get things done without blowing up and otherwise destroying creation. </blockquote>

Notes
Formation may be contrasted with Force.

Formation is applied to Creation through the application of Will/Intent and Expectation.

Force + Formation = Creation

The concept of force in creation is ancient. Notably, the Egyptian God Ptah, patron god of stonemasons(!), is the anthropomorphization of the process if "in-form" ation. "The production of a building or statue involves a process of 'in-formation,' in which a concept originally present only in the artisan's mind in-forms--is imprinted in--raw material through his actions. A block of stone that has been cared into a statue...is materially the same after the process...yet is had also transcended its original raw state: it is now something that it was not before, the representation (tjt 'image') of another reality. What has made the difference between the original and the final state is the action that has in-formed it with the sculptor's concept." (Allen, 1988: 46).

Edward Carpenter seems vaguely aware of the force+formation=creation equation.Speaking of the idea of Justice, "though it may be but a sentiment at first and on its inner side, yet quickly on its outer side it gives itself structure, and regulates the conflicting desires and emotions and needs of the people; and these emotions and desires so regulated from above do each of them in their turn generate and regulate groups of habits and customs; and these again each in their turn innumerable individual acts. And so the idea of Justice becomes creative and alive throughout the whole State.</blockquote>

At one point, Carpenter even refers to the "formative forces...which manifest themselves in the race life."

Oswald Wirth associated the Masonic Empress card with form, ideas, and archetypes, i.e. "...ideal forms or pure ideas according to which everything is created." As he notes, "This sovereign, dazzling with light represents 'Creative INtelligence', the mother of form, pictures, and ideas." . Note the inappropriate and sexist association of form/formation with the female gender.
Cosmic Religious Feeling is the term used by Albert Einstein to describe the awe and reverence he felt at the raw intelligence he saw revealed by "natural laws," an intelligence so grand that "any human logic falters in comparison." Cosmic Religious Feeling is a Connection Outcome.
</blockquote>

Notes
Einstein uses the term both to point to actual religious (i.e. Connection Experience), but also to the specific Connection Outcome which he terms, "cosmic religious feeling."

Einstein felt that amongst the "profounder sort of scientific minds" you'd find each with a "peculiar religious feeling of his own....different from the religion of the naive man [sic]....His religious feeling takes the form of a rapturous amazement at the harmony of natural law, which reveals an
intelligence of such superiority that, compared with it, all the systematic thinking and acting of human beings is an utterly insignificant reflection. This feeling is the guiding principle of his life and work, in so far as he succeeds in keeping himself from the shackles of selfish desire. It is beyond question closely akin to that which has possessed the religious geniuses of all ages."

Einstein felt that cosmic religious feeling was a "religious experience" common to all forms of religions

Einstein outlines his thoughts on this in an essay in the book The World as I See It, in a chapter entitled "Religion and Science."

Einstein felt that "cosmic religious feeling is the strongest and noblest incitement to scientific research" and "the most important function of art and science to awaken this feeling and keep it alive in those who are capable of it." Cosmic religious feeling gives humanity strength ("It is cosmic religious feeling that gives a man strength of this sort.")

Einstein notes that cosmic religious feeling has nothing to do with the fear, morality, and patriarchy of traditional religion.
Awareness Reduction Mechanisms (ARMs), are a subclass of Defense Mechanisms. They are strategies that the Bodily Ego can use to reduce awareness of itself, its physical and mental condition, the "room" that it's in, and the condition of its life. ARMS are typically deployed in order to reduce pain, suffering, guilt, shame, and the disjuncture that arises from internal misalignment or external violence and abuse. Several ARMS exist, the most common being:
Notes
ARMs are broken down into two categories, Externally Directed ARMs and Internally Directed Arms.

There are four basic categories of ARMs.

Primary ARM -> Repression
Secondary ARMs -> Denial, Rationalization, Diversion/Distraction, Intellectualization, Compartmentalization
Tertiary ARMs -> Reaction Formation, Gaslightning,
Pathological ARMs -> Dissociation, Regression, Conversion

ExternalArms
Compartmentalization – suppressing awareness by breaking your life and your cognitive/emotional processes into discrete spaces. When you come home at night, you block out exploitation and abuse you perpetrate at work. When you go to work in the morning, you block out violence in the home. When you go to Church, you do not think about the hypocrisies in your daily life.
Denial– simple refusal to accept reality “as it is.” My mom beat me with a wooden spoon and leather belts, but she denies it to this day. The equivalent external ARM is repression.
Distortion – reshaping reality to avoid awareness of disjunctive realities. “What doesn’t kill you leaves a scar” justifications distort our understanding of violence and abuse and provide a justification for them.
Humor is a form of distortion. Using humor to change the “meaning” of reality. Making sexist, racist, homophobic jokes in an attempt to render the abusive behaviours acceptable, or gain social support.
Intellectualization – Not a defense mechanisms by itself, but a particular form of compartmentalization, dissociation, diversion, using the powers of the intellect
Dissociation – detachment from reality. Disconnection, especially intellectual. Daydreaming through dissociative disorders and fugue.
Diversion/Distraction – engaging in other activities, behaviours that draw attention away from issues in reality. For example, getting into a running club and spending all your time away from family in order to avoid the toxicities/issues at home.
Rationalization – “the justification of one's behaviour and motivations by substituting "good" acceptable reasons for the actual motivations.”

Internal Arms

Dissociation – detachment from reality. Disconnection, especially emotional.1 Daydreaming. Dissociative disorders. Typically used in an attempt to avoid stress/pain/conflict in the environment.
• Diversion/Distraction – engaging in other activities, behaviours that allow one draw attention away from feelings. For example, getting into a running club and spending your entire time running. Includes obsessions, compulsions, hypochondriasis, etc.
• Repression – forced submersion of thoughts (I am doing something wrong) and feelings, like guilt, shame, etc. For the equivalent internal ARM, see Denial.
• Regression – fall back to childhood states, allowing only simpler, childlike emotions and awareness.
• Projection – projecting guilt, shame, other negative emotions and thoughts onto others.
• Reaction formation – choreographing the opposite emotions. Denial.

Maslow has some interesting things to say about defense mechanisms, especially in light of the LP concept of Alignment, also about the nature of therapy (it is about uncovering rather than molding, and that even neurosis are somehow aimed at the g\ratification of human needs (see Seven Essential Needs. Thus for example OCD may be an attempt to satisfy one's need for safety by routinizing activity and blocking out toxic impositions.

"A fifth axiom of self-actualization theory is my contention-as yet unproven that neurosis must be considered a psychological defense and not basic to human
nature. Furthermore, neurosis must be viewed as a defense against the intrinsic self, our deeper layers, full humanness, growth, and self-actualization. From this assumption, I have argued vigorously that effective counseling and psychotherapy are Taoistic or uncovering, rather than involving mainly shaping, molding, or indoctrinating....It may be relevant to point out here that ordinary neurosis and even the valve pathologies like delinquency may consequently be viewed as efforts toward the gratification of basic and meta-needs, but under the conditions of anxiety, fear, lack of courage."

For LP purposes, we break ARMs down into two general categories, External ARMs and Internal ARMs. External ARMs are defense mechanisms aimed at reducing awareness of things external to the individual, like the behaviour of others, conditions at work, bullying by students/teachers, etc. Internal ARMs are defense mechanisms aimed at reducing awareness of things internal to the individual, like disjunctive shame and guilt, or awareness of complicity, etc.

An individual may deploy several ARMs at the same time.
<blockquote class="definition">In the Lurian Kabbalah, The Breaking of the Vessels (Shevirat Ha-kelim) is a point of failure in the initial Emanation from Godhead. The Shevirat comes after the initial creative stage known as Constriction. Constriction (a.k.a. Zimzum) created Tehiru (i.e. emptiness or "space") which Divine Light then shines into in order to manifest physical creation. When the Divine Light shines into Tehiru (space), it creates and then pours into Sefirot. The initial outpouring fails and the sefirot "break." After which there needs to be a Correction. The correction aims at Tikkun (in LP terms Alignment and Perfection). When Tikkun is reached, divine Perfection and Unity (a.k.a. perfect Connection) are established.

*The "breaking of the vessels" is an ongoing problem.

The Lurianic narrative continues and portrays everything that happened after the shevirah as divine attempts to overcome and correct that initial catastrophe. Divine light poured again and formed the system of the sefirot, and the lower worlds were created. The creation of Adam in the Garden of Eden was again an attempt to overcome dualism: Adam was created as a dual entity, including within him the elements of good and evil. If Adam had obeyed God, good would have triumphed over evil and the cosmic and divine dualism would have been abolished.

However, when Adam transgressed, the opposite happened: the shevirah occurred again, the evil powers were strengthened. God then chose a people, the people of Israel, to carry on the struggle to dispose of evil. They were almost successful when they assembled near Mount Sinai to accept the Torah. Then they transgressed when they worshipped the golden calf, and again a shevirah occurred, and so on, throughout history."

*In LP terms, the "breaking of the vessels" is a problem of alignment. Here evil may simply be considered the existence and consequence of lack of alignment.
Avoidance is an Awareness Reduction Mechanisms that the Bodily Ego uses to avoid uncomfortable confrontation with ideas, feelings, or realities. When we avoid, we consciously and deliberately choose not to consider or engage with an idea, feeling, or reality. We avoid going into therapy because we are afraid of what might happen. We avoid atoning for wrong action because we don't want to deal with the backlash.
Avoidance is conscious and therefore easy to identify. Avoidance is rooted in fear, feelings of inadequacy, Learned Helplessness, and so on. We avoid taking a course because we fear failure. We avoid addressing a trauma because we fear the negative blowback.
Notes
The Masonic Tarot is not a spiritual tool. It is a propaganda tool. It was created by Freemasons during the French and Industrial Revolutions to help lubricate the transfer of power from Feudal elites to Capitalist elites.

Elisabeth Haich makes outlandish, undocumented, and now thoroughly debunked claims about the ancient nature of the Tarot. "The initiates of prehistoric times who created the tarot cards were familiar with all these different levels and states of development of the human consciousness. They depicted these levels of consciousness from the first awakening to divine all-consciousness in twenty-two pictures. These are the 'Greater Arcana' of tl1e tarot pack."

Haich proselatizes the deck and suggests psychologists should avail themselves of its ancient wisdom. "Moses, one of the greatest prophets of all time, received the pictures from the great Egyptian initiates and handed them on as religious treasure to his people, the Jews. If Moses esteemed these cards so highly as to regard them as religious treasure, then the serious psychologist should certainly also be able to discover their profound inner value."

Haich says "Yet for the person who understands them, these cards are a wonderful means of acquiring self-knowledge....The nature of these cards is such that they can produce a strong awakening effect on man's unconscious....They are like a spiritual mirror in which we can not only recognise but also thoroughly examine and study ourselves. "

The world’s foremost tarot scholars to suggest that the Tarot has been the "...most successful propaganda campaign ever launched; not by a very long way the most important, but the most completely successful. An entire false history, and false interpretation, of the Tarot pack was concocted by occultist; and it is all but universally believed. "

The tarot is designed to be constitutive of personal identity suitable to the Capitalist Mode of Production. It purports to locate the individual in relation to the System and the "Cosmos." "The Tarot is a system of enlightenment, a system whose ultimate aim is "assisting the individual in understanding his relationship to the Cosmos." It provides "seed ideas" intended to lead to a certain understanding of the human condition.

The Masonic Tarot, in its esoteric form, is elitist. It is a "secret oral tradition." Knowledge and power given only to the worthy. "It has revealed Itself, in a measure, to the wise."

The Masonic tarot has two "streams," an elite esoteric stream aimed at elite members of exclusive fraternities (Freemasonry, Rosicrucians, Golden Dawn, etc.) and an exoteric stream aimed at the masses. This dual-stream is an explicit and openly admitted feature of Western esotericism. For example,

"The religion of the masses differed very much from that of the Initiates. They did not share in the Mysteries, nor in the advantages of the Initiates, in the same way as they were never in danger of the penalties to which the trespasser of the Mysteries was exposed. The greatest of the Mysteries was that they should eternally remain mysteries to the masses. he initiated worshipped the one true God under the name of Demiurgos. The masses, on the other hand, worshipped without let or hindrance the secondary kind of gods, whose worship, when amongst themselves, was forbidden to the Initiates. In public even the Initiates adhered to them, in order to deceive the masses, and the better to preserve their secrets amongst themselves."

Pianco calls this the Secret Philosophy.

The difference between the two streams is one of intent. The esoteric stream is aimed at socializing elites into mechanisms of power and control, while the exoteric stream is aimed at creating compliant bodies. In this regard, the TOSAS distinguished between the Book of Slavery (the exoteric version intended to create compliant bodies) and the Book of Power.

The threat of violence is used to prevent initiates from revealing "the secrets."

The Masonic Tarot, in its exoteric form, exerts control over individual consciousness and inscribes a Fool in School ethic on the individual. Life is all about karma and lessons and so don't struggle or fight back, passively accept and learn your lessons. If things don't go your way, it is your fault, your karma, your lack of sensitivity, talent, receptiveness, etc. For example, Metzner notes that "If we are receptive with innocent purity, the blessings of the light of the stars pour abundantly into earth-body and emotional waters."

A classic statement of this perspective is "The Tarot is a deck of 78 cards, each with its own imagery, symbolism and story. The 22 Major Arcana cards represent life's karmic and spiritual lessons, and the 56 Minor Arcana cards reflect the trials and tribulations that we experience on a daily basis."

Many respectable scholars and well-educated folk, take tarot to be a tool of deep spiritual, archetypal, or psychological wisdom. A "holistic tool that can help us mine our own unconscious..."

Psychologist Ralph Metzner discusses the "Hero's Journey" and suggests that tarot is a reflection of that journey, a reflection of "archetypes of psychic transformation." As he says, "In these myths the inner journey to the discovery and realization of the Higher Self—the trials and obstacles to be overcome as well as the sudden breakthroughs and steps of initiation are disguised as an outer journey, a hero’s quest. And we find that there is always a common pattern to this myth of the hero “with a thousand faces”:2 whether his name is Gilgamesh, Rama, Orpheus, or Siegfried, there exists a communality which stems from the fact that all these heros are engaged in the same eternal quest."

The Masonic Tarot is sexist. All authors who comment upon the archetypes reproduce binary and stereotypical notions of gender. "He is the objective aspect of consciousness....she is the subjective aspect..."

Writers, like Paul Foster Case and Aleister Crowley, etc. use EPMO to obscure the basic ideology. Long paragraphs of tortuous prose with complicated and largely meaningless associations obscure the basic ideological statements. See for example Case

The Masonic Tarot is based on an ancient Old Energy Creation Template, a Zoroastrian Creation Template.

This analysis focuses primarily on the major arcana. The minor arcana are considered less important, even (in personified form) a perversion of occult principle."

Patriarchal, Judeo Christian roots. "It is forbidden to blaspheme against his creation."

Although the tarot deck itself was originally merely a pack of playing cards, it was particularly suited to the creation of an archetypal system because, as can be clearly seen in the symbolic pastiche on the Wheel of Fortune card, the Tarot cards are rich with symbolism. The rich symbolic content makes it easy to project any content one would wish to project onto the cards (Decker et al., 1996, p. 171), a particular useful function for elites attempting to create a new discourse.

Recovery
Many tarot aficionados and writers attempt to re-write the esoteric and exoteric tarot, trying to find alternative, sometimes more progressive, "less disturbing" more "life-affirming" messaging.

Doreen Virtue exposed her process: For example, "...symbolism was very carefully reviewed. When something distressing was removed from an image, we were diligent about replacing it with something peaceful that signified the same thing. Card names were changed when necessary to more accurately convey the loving message embedded in even the most challenging cards."

Virtue also makes effort to remove "mystery" and "secrets." However, she still duplicates the a-political, blame-the-individual tropes of the masonic tarot. We are still here to learn our lessons, and we should "give thanks" for that. She just presents the tropes and the masonic perspectives in a more "loving" and inviting manner.

Metzner also discusses the "Tarot for the Aquarian Age" from 1962 was as one such attempt. "This Tarot was obtained, according to the authors, from an unnamed source referred to only as “One,” through the Ouija board, in a series of sessions involving a group of four persons and lasting several months in 1962.... In the Aquarian Tarot each of the twenty-two cards, with a new image and new name, is regarded as a progression from a corresponding card of the old deck. The reason for the progression is said to be first, to rescue the Tarot symbols from their degenerate use as fortune-telling cards, and secondly, because we are entering a new phase, the Aquarian phase, of the cycle of human evolution-in-consciousness and new symbols are called for." " His discussion, like Virtue's, contains no awareness of the political and ideological nature of the original tarot, though both are noteworthy as attempts to recover/imprint authenticity.

Various attempts to recover or insert authenticity are documented in the Recovery section of the individual tarot entries.
Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Cognitive Needs
No doubt Maslow based his statement of the existence and significance of cognitive needs on his clinical evidence, these needs are self-evident in every small child. The need to know is on display in children at a very early age. As Maslow says, this is the "basic desire to know, to be aware of reality, to get the facts, to satisfy curiosity, or as Wertheimer phrases it, to see rather than to be blind." (Maslow, 1943, p. 385). On the need to understand, Maslow observed that "even after we know, we are impelled to know more and more minutely and microscopically on the one hand, and on the other, more and more extensively in the direction of a world philosophy, religion, etc." (Maslow, 1943, p. 385). In other words, it was never enough to just know something, we also had to understand. According to Maslow, "The facts that we acquire, if they are isolated or atomistic, inevitably get theorized about, and either analyzed or organized or both. This process has been phrased by some as the search for 'meaning.' We shall then postulate a desire to understand, to systematize, to organize, to analyze, to look for relations and meanings"(Maslow, 1943, p. 385). Maslow notes of the need to know and the need to understand, "we see that they too form themselves into a small hierarchy"

Skull and Bones
A collegiate level ideological institution that focuses on recruiting the best and the brightest at Yale. Selections appear carefully researched, and designed to capture future film-makers, journalists, religious leaders, sports elites, military, and minority elites. See for example the comments of Lanny Davis, quoted in the Atlantic

<blockquote>
If the society had a good year, this is what the "ideal" group will consist of: a football captain; a Chairman of the Yale Daily News; a conspicuous radical; a Whiffenpoof; a swimming captain; a notorious drunk with a 94 average; a film-maker; a political columnist; a religious group leader; a Chairman of the Lit; a foreigner; a ladies' man with two motorcycles; an ex-service man; a negro, if there are enough to go around; a guy nobody else in the group had heard of, ever.
</blockquote>

Operates by perpetuating old energy archetypes, through ritual and also on going discussion.

Collects "dirt" on its members, example, past sexual events, which may sometimes be offering evidence on "conquests" (which may reasonably be expected, given the deeply embedded patriarchy in America, to potentially an accounting of rapes).

<blockquote>
One of the standard pieces of lore about Skull and Bones is that each member must at some point give an account of his sexual history, known as the CB (for "Connubial Bliss"). "After the first one or two times it's like guys listing their conquests, and that gets old," one young Bonesman told me recently. "There's just not that much to talk about"—and so CBs have evolved into relationship discussions. "It's the kind of stuff a lot of guys do with their teammates," says another Bonesman ('83). </blockquote>

Bonesmen (what society members all themselves) refer to members of the public as "barbarians."

In an Atlantic article, Alexandra Robbins refers to an "especially susceptible kind of 'barbarian' as it pooh poohs the ideological functions of the organization, and diverts attention by casting skeptics and critics as conspiracy nuts.
