When the PU experiences something, that information is being stored as memory, which can be accessed later on when the PU remembers it. Since the [[CQ]] of the PU is limited, consciousness cannot encompass the entirety of its memory at the same time. It is limited to a specific "area" of the "memory bank" depending on the amount of CQ the PU possesses at that moment. All experiences that are made by the PU are being stored, but not all of them can be accessed easily. Information Positioning entails the distribution of these information to different "areas". Some information are put into positions that can be easily accessed by the awareness of the PU, others are put into positions that are strongly avoided by the awareness of the PU.

An easy way to understand this process is with tags. Imagine all experiences the PU makes are stored on shelves that are placed in rooms. At the door of each room (read [[COEX Systems|COEX]]) is a tag that depicts what kind of experiences are stored on the shelves of that room. Prior to entering the room, the PU reads the sign and depending on what it sees, it is either attracted to entering that room or disgusted with it, and avoids it. The PU uses IP as a technique to minimize [[Disjuncture]], thereby minimizing stress, which in turn contributes to the long term survival of the PU.

Informational Positioning uses the limited awareness (CQ) of the PU to the advantage of the PU by placing unpleasant information into rooms (COEXES) that are out of reach for the awareness of the PU.

== Typical Defense Mechanisms using IP ==

=== Repression ===

A typical implementation is the use of Repression. When we repress, we don't divert interpretation of the experience, as is the case with Awareness Redirection Mechanisms (Denial, Projection, Rationalization, Distortion). We accept it "as it is". More precisely, we accept it as we interpreted it, despite it being unpleasant. If the psychological system of the PU would not handle the experience via IP, then the PU would be constantly aware of those experiences, which would be highly debilitating from several perspectives simultaneously. Thus, when the PU experiences unpleasant things, and Awareness Redirection Mechanisms are unable to beautify those experiences sufficiently, it is left with little other choice but to tuck those experiences away into places that are not easily reachable by the awareness of the PU. Due to IP, the PU is able to function well despite those experiences, rendering it functional despite toxic conditions.

IP is a technique that enables the PU to function despite toxic conditions. The use of IP is by no means salutatory. It is only necessary in toxic conditions. A healthy socialization context would render the use of IP, Awareness Redirection Mechanisms and Awareness Reduction Mechanisms essentially obsolete.

== Other Visualizations of this Process ==

=== [[Water Glass Metaphor]]===

Another useful visualization of IP is the water glass metaphor. Imagine a glass with water in it. The glass represents your PU. It is the container of the "consciousness juice". The water/juice, represents your consciousness. The amount of water in your glass represents your CQ. It can vary depending on a host of factors; for instance holes in your glass. Now when the PU experiences something, it stores the experiences onto the walls of the glass. Wherever the water reaches, it is in touch with the walls of the glass which contain the memories of past experiences.Those experiences are easily remembered by the PU. More precisely, there is no barrier to accessing those information. IP entails the positioning of information to places that are above the "normal" level of the water. Thus, awareness never comes into contact with those information and is relieved of having to deal with them.

Given that the CQ raises out of whatever reason, the water level raises, and the awareness of the PU gets into contact with information that were previously tucked away from its reach. Since those information were deliberately tucked away onto those places by the psychological system of the PU, you can bet they are not very pleasant. The PU will have to deal with it now that the CQ raised in the glass, and it suddenly has access to those information. This explains why Awakening is often a difficult undertaking. Awakening (Activation and especially Ascension) is the process of stably gaining more CQ.

=== Hot Teacup Metaphor ===

The hot teacup metaphor is a more precise, but slightly more difficult to grasp visualization of the process. Keep in mind the concept of fractals while reading this.

Imagine a teacup. The teabag is put into it and hot water poured over it. Let's say we wait for a couple of hours. After this time, the tea has imprinted itself onto the walls of the cup. The walls are becoming brownish (infused by the tea) Say we don't wash the teacup, and pour hot water over the same type of tea again and again. After a bunch of iterations, you will have difficulties washing the cup clean, because so much of the tea has been imprinted onto the cup. In this metaphor, the cup is once again your PU. The teabags are the experiences your PU makes. The hot water that is being put onto the teabag is your Consciousness. The temperature of the water depicts the CQ. Given you make 100 times the same experience, then the flavor of that experience is deeply ingrained onto the inner side of the cup. This is the process of Conditioning.

This metaphor allows for several tweaks of its three variables.

a) the cup (whether it has holes or not)

b) the tea (what kind of experience imprints itself onto the inner side of the cup)

c) the hot water (how much of it is poured onto the tea, and also how hot it is)

The water glass metaphor already (vaguely) deals with a, b and the first part of c.

The interesting bit is the idea of how hot the water is that is poured into the glass. When the water is very very hot, then the tea that is on the inner side of the cup will dissolve into the liquid due to the high temperature. The temperature being your CQ, it is clear that even though the hot water reaches certain spots, it will only dissolve the tea relative to the temperature of the water. So, even though the information is reachable for the PU from a "positional point of view", it cannot be accessed, because the water is not hot enough to dissolve the memories on the specific spot. The information is essentially hidden away by layers of other information. (Similar to the concept of Encapsulation in Object Oriented Programming). Since the CQ of the PU is not high enough, it is not confronted with the information that is encapsulated this way. Perhaps it helps to think of fractals here. Let's say the first and second layers of a fractal are visible, but the layers deeper are not. When the CQ raises, it is suddenly able to see a larger part of the fractal. This is equivalent to raising the temperature of the water, thereby dissolving the tea. The flavor of the tea gets stronger for the awareness, because it dissolved a larger, and more intricate part of the tea from the inner sides of the cup, which were put there by previous experiences.

Defense Mode involves changes in the body's hormonal chemistry that lead to physiological changes in the body, which are subsequently expressed in psychological and emotional changes. Changes may be grouped into short term and long term.

===Antiquated Programming===

Modern societies and modern economic systems theoretically obviate the need for survival mode. Current technologies can provide for the safety and security of all members of the human race. Thus no individual physical unit needs to experience stress or threat. In this context survival mode is an antiquated and irrelevant feature of the physical unit.

Despite being largely antiquated and unnecessary, survival mode remains a feature of the physical unit. This is because mechanisms of natural selection no longer operate and therefore programming cannot be "naturally" selected out. Note, it is possible conscientiously and willfully change survival programming. Such a task should be undertaken only when danger is eliminated, stress is minimized, and survival is no longer an issue.

===Long Term Toxicity===

It should be noted that the survival responses of the physical unit are functional only in the short term. Long term activation of survival mode lowers the [[Consciousness Quotient] ([[CQ]]) of the Physical Unit, causes difficult to repair changes to brain chemistry, and leads to degradation of the body's physical systems.

Survival Mode roots psychopathology. Pathological responses, toxic behavioral patterns, the presence of [[Defense Mechanisms]], etc. is predicated on the activation of Survival Mode. Reducing pathological and toxic behavioural patterns is thus predicated on deactivation of survival mode.

Survival Mode may be contrasted with [[Deficit Mode]] and [[Performance Mode]].

The Calling may also used to refer to the internal spiritual call to [[awaken]] to identity and purpose, [[activate]] the body's [[Energy System]], and participate in the culmination of [[The Great Work]] of [[Ascension]].

The Calling is typically experienced as a powerful internal urge to [[Awaken]] (i.e. figure out what's going on) and [[Atone]] (i.e. clean up for past [[Disjuncture|disjunctive behaviour]]. )

The Calling is based on an internal, biological drive, a cognitive need to know and understand things (see [[Seven Essential Needs]]. This drive can be suppressed, but is rarely destroyed. [[Spiritual Ego]] can prime this drive at appropriate junctures to encourage awakening and push for healing and reconnection.

Failure to heed The Call, i.e. resistance to the coded behaviour of awakening, has serious psychological and emotional consequences for the physical unit. If this drive is improperly ignored or improperly expressed, [[Guilt]], [[Shame]], [[Anxiety]], desperation, and other negative emotional and psychological sequelea can overwhelm the individual.

Denial, not a river in Egypt, is the simple verbal refusal to accept reality as it is. Denial is often invoked when there is an external challenge to remember otherwise repressed or suppressed materials. When somebody comes up to you and says, “Hey, do you remember being a bully in school,” your defensive response might be to deny so you do not have to admit and recall. For example, my mom beat me with a wooden spoon and leather belts when I was a child, but when I recalled these events and challenged her as an adult, she denied she ever did it, presumably to prevent feeling bad about some of her actions. ==Treatment==

Denial is rooted in fear, anxiety, and pain. One denies one's actions when one is afraid of what others might do should they learn the truth (Tim Cook might go to jail for tax evasion) or when the awareness brings anxiety or emotional pain (my mother denied her abuse to avoid feeling guilt and shame). To treat, address the underlying fear, anger, guilt, or shame.

Guilt and shame may be resolved by teaching the client to change their behaviours, atone for past negative actions, and teaching them to forgive themselves in order to release guilt and shame. Note, releasing guilt and shame requires concrete behavioural changes and sincere action to atone.

For example, getting into a running club and spending all your time away from family in order to avoid the divert and distract from the toxicities/issues at home.

Distraction is a form of Isolation or, as we say on the LP, Informational Positioning. Isolation or informational positioning is a cognitive process involving the creation of a gap between an unpleasant or threatening cognition or memory, and other thoughts, feelings, and anything that can trigger a memory. Isolation works with the associative pathways of memory. We remember “less often” by minimizing associative connections.

Isolation is in operation when a person who begins a train of thought suddenly switches gears because the thoughts are getting to “close” and potentially triggering memories of, for example, sexual assault. For example, an individual may start off thinking about a childhood trip, but suddenly change the subject when the recall of that trip gets too close to a painful memory. An individual may also avoid thinking about certain topics, and avoid certain situations or people in their life, as way to avoid associations that might trigger painful trauma or disjuncture.

The following is excerpted from "Huichol People: An Ancient Unbroken Lineage of Healers."<blockquote>The Huichol People are rare when it comes to North American shamanic traditions. Unlike most indigenous populations of this region, which have undergone some degree of death, transformation or fragmentation post-Columbus, the Huichol maintain an unbroken lineage which extends back to the earliest roots of their tribal heritage.

The Huichol People refer to themselves as the Virarica, which roughly translates as “the healing people.” They are a small tribe of approximately 35,000 who live in central western Mexico in the Sierra Madre mountains. They are said to be the last remaining tribe in North America to have maintained their indigenous practices, though today they face numerous threats to their culture. Until recently, their choice to live in seclusion in a remote and rugged location, as well as their commitment to a nature-based lifestyle have kept them protected from outside cultural influences. Today they face struggle with the Mexican government and land possession, pressures to switch from corn farming to tobacco farming, and the incessant influence of missionaries attempting to convert them. Still, thousands of Huichol remain in their birth place, living and practicing in the ways of their ancestors, fighting to keep the flame of their lineage alive. Amazingly, the Huichol have no history of war. They are a peaceful people who have sustained themselves for generations in harmony with themselves and the land.

The wisdom teachings of the Huichol boils down to a simple yet deep reverence for nature and a ceremonial way of life that connects them to the spirit world. The purity and wisdom of the Huichol have made their influence on many Westerners seeking deeper healing and meaning in their lives. Several books by Westerners have been written about their personal experiences and journeys with the Huichol, including Tom Pinkson’s book The Shamanic Wisdom of Huichol. In it he recounts his life-changing transformational time spent with the Huichol, learning from the sacred peyote plant and the wisdom imparted to him by the Huichol shamans.

Peyote (''hikuri'' in Huichol) is the primary plant sacrament that Huichol use in their ceremonial prayer.

Peyote is a small cactus with psychoactive alkaloids, specifically mescaline, which in large quantities produce colorful and vivid hallucinogenic visions. For the Huichol, peyote plays a principle role in their cosmology, serving multiple functions within the tribe. Ceremonially, it acts as a gateway to the spirit realms, where they can commune with the gods. But peyote also has a long lineage of use as a traditional or “folklore” medicine and is commonly used by traditional people’s for things like influenza and diabetes. The Huichol are known to rub the juices of fresh peyote into wounds to prevent infection and to promote healing. Its profoundly alkalizing effect on the body makes it useful as an herbal application to help prevent and support the healing of various illness.

Once a year, the Huichol make a journey to Wirikuta where they go each year to collect peyote. Their pilgrimage takes place annually as a desire to return to the origins of life and seek healing and restoration. Upon arrival they begin their hunt, and when they find the first cactus it is shared by everyone in the tribe. They then harvest enough peyote for one year. This is the only trip they make for the whole year to supply their needs for peyote.
