Chronic emotional and psychological anguish can make you susceptible to addiction. This is because addictive substances give your brain much needed "pleasure" fixes. When you lack the hugs, kisses, and positive nurturing support all humans desperately need, you find substances that can give you the "hits" your [[Physical Unit]] desperately needs.

Toxic attachment, (whether it is to alcohol, shopping, money, etc.) can control your thoughts and govern your daily actions. Addiction causes you, among other things, to waste psychological and emotional energy on [[Addiction Defenses]].

We lose valuable time defending our addiction, that could be used for healing and connection and instead waste in on our addictive behaviors. We defend our addictions by covering it up, by spending valuable time “servicing” the addiction, etc. Addictions can also directly undermine your body’s ability to connect. You can’t be properly connected while stupefying yourself with alcohol.

When you come home at night, you block out exploitation and abuse you perpetrate at work. When you go to work in the morning, you block out violence in the home. * Denial– simple refusal to accept reality “as it is.” My mom beat me with a wooden spoon and leather belts, but she denies it to this day. The equivalent external ARM is repression.
* Distortion – reshaping reality to avoid awareness of disjunctive realities. “What doesn’t kill you leaves a scar” justifications distort our understanding of violence and abuse and provide a justification for them.
** Humor is a form of distortion. Using humor to change the “meaning” of reality. Making sexist, racist, homophobic jokes in an attempt to render the abusive behaviours acceptable, or gain social support.
**Intellectualization – Not a defense mechanisms by itself, but a particular form of compartmentalization, dissociation, diversion, using the powers of the intellect
* Dissociation – detachment from reality. Disconnection, especially intellectual. Daydreaming through dissociative disorders and fugue.
* Diversion/Distraction – engaging in other activities, behaviours that draw attention away from issues in reality. For example, getting into a running club and spending all your time away from family in order to avoid the toxicities/issues at home.
* Rationalization – “the justification of one's behaviour and motivations by substituting "good" acceptable reasons for the actual motivations.”

Spiritual teachers [often] comment on the nature and establishment of right environment.

From the Christian Bible, Mathew 5: 21-22.

“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a] and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

Note that ''Raca'' is an Aramaic term for contempt.

So, why would Jesus admonish his followers against anger and name-calling? Because such behaviours are out of [[Alignment]] and lead to the hellish experience of [[Disconnection]]. Right environment is an environment free of all forms of violence, including verbal violence. Even the negative energy of the angry voice is condemened by Jesus Christ.

Because most environments are toxic, right environment often requires the establishment of a [[Cocooning| cocoon]], where we keep toxicity away.

On the impact of LSD on the Bodily Ego and bodily ego defense mechanism "It is generally remarked that LSD dissolves the repressive barriers, or that defense mechanisms are generally impaired. These statements, in my opinion, are not entirely accurate. It is true that the subject's ability to repress is likely to be impaired. But as these barriers are lowered, and charged material threatens to enter awareness, an increased mobilization of repressive efforts often occurs in waves, operating massively and crudely to block out not only the threatening material but much associated material as well. As repression fails further, various other more regressive mechanisms are brought into play, such as denial and projection. Only occasionally will defense mechanisms fail almost entirely in certain subjects and a panic state ensue. More often, new defenses are brought into play, and the subject reaches relative equilibrium at a more regressed level. Certain mechanisms, especially repression and reaction formation, appear to be most vulnerable to LSD. Other, presumably more primitive defenses, such as regression denial, introjection, and projection, may function very effectively. For example, some predisposed subjects are capable of developing highly systematized paranoid delusions under the effects of marked LSD intoxication. Boundaries may be visualized with any material (e.g. bricks) or energy (e.g. white light). To build a boundary, visualize an energy wall, a stone wall, or some other sort of fortification around your body, your house, and all those people and things that you wish to help protect. The boundary visualization is most effective when performed in the morning when you wake up, in the evening before you go to bed, and repeated multiple times throughout your day.

When visualizing a boundary, do not make it impenetrable to all things.
