* Redirect your attention, take deep breaths and distract your self. Listen to calming music, stare at a candle, hold a single positive thought in your mind by repeating an affirmation "I am strong, I am capable, I can handle the Flow."
* Willing the Flow of Consciousness to slow down. In other words, assert mental control over your thought process. Forms of connection practice like [[Transcendental Meditation]] are designed to train you to control the flow.

Flow control is a critical aspect of [[Connection Practice]]. Without flow control, thoughts derived either from the unconscious contents of your mind or from expanded/accelerating flow of [[Consciousness]] from [[The Fabric]] can run out of control, cause [[Fear]] or other forms of [[Connection Pathology]], and ultimately shut down the nascent [[connection]].

Lack of flow control interferes with [[Healing]] and [[Connection]] by putting the physical unit at the mercy of uncontrolled thought processes, by stripping the physical unit of the ability to focus on specific tasks (esp. in higher states of consciousness), and by facilitating easy external behavioural control (i.e. manipulation by others).

An individual will rationalize their exploitation of child labour, for example, by saying things like "It helps their economy or their family," effectively suppressing the reality of their exploitation by covering it over with a rationalized veneer.

Rationalization occurs when we justify and make excuses for things we have done, or things we have experienced. Rationalization is a common defence response when people are being asked to remember and acknowledge their behaviour. It happens in domestic life and in the corporate world. In addition to denying, Tim Cook, the Apple CEO, made excuses for his company’s tax avoidance. He rationalized his companies practices, saying things like “we pay all the taxes we owe” and that they have always done it that way. Similarly, parents who abuse their children and who find, as the children grow up, simple denial ineffective will make excuses and come up with rationalizations. They will say, “I did the best I could” or you were a “difficult” child or whatever. The excuses that people come up with are legion.

A parent rationalizes chronic emotional, psychological, or physical assault of their own children by saying "It builds character," or "Spare the rod and spoil the child."

ARMs are invoked to handle the pain and anguish of disjuncture and trauma. You can rationalize your own trauma to yourself. When you do that, it helps you put the memories back on the shelf. Rather than remember and process the full painful trauma of an abusive childhood, for example, adults will tell themselves things like their toxic experiences made them stronger, or built up their character, or made them what they are today. When we rationalize our own trauma, we give ourselves the power to press the memories back down so we do not have to experience and deal with the pain. Of course, doing that does not solve any of your issues. If you want to properly process and heal, you have to remember and process the trauma. There is no other way.

==Treatement==

Rationalizations often cover up fear, anxiety, guilt, and shame. Discover the client's reasons for rationalization. Are they afraid of reprisal? Are the actions out of alignment? Does honest treatment bring guilt and shame? Help them process their emotions, forgive their past actions, and change their behaviour in a way that doesn't require them to rationalize.

Pathological ARMs -> Dissociation, Regression, Conversion

ExternalArms
Compartmentalization – suppressing awareness by breaking your life and your cognitive/emotional processes into discrete spaces. When you come home at night, you block out exploitation and abuse you perpetrate at work. When you go to work in the morning, you block out violence in the home. When you go to Church, you do not think about the hypocrisies in your daily life.
Denial– simple refusal to accept reality “as it is.” My mom beat me with a wooden spoon and leather belts, but she denies it to this day. The equivalent external ARM is repression.
Distortion – reshaping reality to avoid awareness of disjunctive realities. “What doesn’t kill you leaves a scar” justifications distort our understanding of violence and abuse and provide a justification for them.
Humor is a form of distortion. Using humor to change the “meaning” of reality. Making sexist, racist, homophobic jokes in an attempt to render the abusive behaviours acceptable, or gain social support.
Intellectualization – Not a defense mechanisms by itself, but a particular form of compartmentalization, dissociation, diversion, using the powers of the intellect
Dissociation – detachment from reality. Disconnection, especially intellectual. Daydreaming through dissociative disorders and fugue.
Diversion/Distraction – engaging in other activities, behaviours that draw attention away from issues in reality. For example, getting into a running club and spending all your time away from family in order to avoid the toxicities/issues at home.
Rationalization – “the justification of one's behaviour and motivations by substituting "good" acceptable reasons for the actual motivations.”

Internal Arms

Dissociation – detachment from reality. Disconnection, especially emotional.1 Daydreaming. Dissociative disorders. Typically used in an attempt to avoid stress/pain/conflict in the environment.
• Diversion/Distraction – engaging in other activities, behaviours that allow one draw attention away from feelings. For example, getting into a running club and spending your entire time running. Includes obsessions, compulsions, hypochondriasis, etc.
• Repression – forced submersion of thoughts (I am doing something wrong) and feelings, like guilt, shame, etc. For the equivalent internal ARM, see Denial.
• Regression – fall back to childhood states, allowing only simpler, childlike emotions and awareness.
• Projection – projecting guilt, shame, other negative emotions and thoughts onto others.
• Reaction formation – choreographing the opposite emotions. Denial.

Maslow has some interesting things to say about defense mechanisms, especially in light of the LP concept of [[Alignment]], also about the nature of therapy (it is about uncovering rather than molding, and that even neurosis are somehow aimed at the g\ratification of human needs (see [[Seven Essential Needs]]. Thus for example OCD may be an attempt to satisfy one's need for safety by routinizing activity and blocking out toxic impositions.
