==The Phenomenology of  Connection==

Connection may be identified by its phenomenology. When one connects, one feels like they have moved into an abnormal (not normal) space. They feel connected to "something more."

'''Freeman''' suggests that "mystical experience entails not only an encounter with the other... but also the sense that "this encountered Other is larger than me, or comes 'before' me, that it embodies a dimension of reality that is ''prior'' to the more mundane spheres ordinarily inhabited."<ref>Freeman, M. “The Priority of the Other: Mysticism’s Challenge to the Legacy of the Self.” In Mysticism: A Variety of Psychological Perspectives, edited by Jacob A. Belzen and Antoon Geels, 213–34. New York: Rodopi, 2003. p. 213.</ref>

Hood <ref>Ralph W. Hood, Jr. “Differential Triggering of Mystical Experience as a Function of Self Actualization.” Review of Religious Research 18, no. 3 (1977): 264. https://doi.org/10.2307/3510214.</ref> provides a classification of mystical triggers, including natural triggers (all aspects of nature), sexual triggers (sexual intercourse, note he restricts this to "heterosexual" intercourse), drug triggers, religious triggers (religious settings and religious activities, rituals, and prayer).

== Theoretical Approaches ==
There are three general approaches to the study of connection experience, an '''reductionist approach,''' an '''adaptive approach,''' and a '''transformative approach.'''

The reductionist approach reduces mysticism, often in a normative and dismissive manner, to neurological/psychoanalytic phenomenon (i.e. an infantile state).

The adaptive approach frames mysticisms as healing enterprise.

The transformative approach frames mysticism as capable of leading to profound personal, psychological, sociological, political transformations. <ref>Parsons, William B. ''The Enigma of the Oceanic Feeling: Revisioning the Psychoanalytic Theory of Mysticism.'' Cambridge, MA: Oxford University Press, 1999. <nowiki>https://amzn.to/2Tq1qsl</nowiki>.</ref>

Grof speaks of mystical experiences as "connection with the spiritual realm..." <ref>Grof, S. (1999). Technologies of the Sacred—Part Two. ''The International Journal of Humanities and Peace'', ''15''(1), 93–96. p. 93. https://www.lightningpath.org/readings/Technologies_of_the_sacred_II.pdf</ref>

'''The benefits of connection:''' "...indigenous shamans worldwide know that spirit power is basic to one’s health, survival, and ability to heal others. Without this power, one is not resistant to illness or misfortune." <ref>Harner, Michael. Cave and Cosmos: Shamanic Encounters with Another Reality. Berkeley, California: North Atlantic Books, 2013.</ref>

"Religious experience, the mystic experience, the peak experience, and all paranormal experiences may have one thing in common. They are the encounters with consciousness ''as such...''"<ref>Ramakrishna, K. Rao. “Some Reflections on Religion and Anomalies of Consciousness.” In Body, Mind, Spirit, 68–82. Charlottesville, VA: Hampton Roads, 1997. p. 80</ref>

Stace called mystical experience "a psychological fact of which there is abundant evidence." He further went on to say that, "To deny or doubt that it exists as a psychological fact is not a reputable opinion. It is ignorance and "very stupid." <Ref>Stace, Walter Terence. Mysticism and Philosophy. New York: Mentor, 1960</ref>

William Harmless in his study, Mystics (2008), quotes Gerson: “The saints use various names to describe these interior forms of experiential knowledge of God … They speak of contemplation, ecstasy, rapture, liquefaction, transformation, union, exultation. They talk of a jubilation beyond the spirit, of being taken into a divine darkness, of tasting God, of embracing the bridegroom, of kissing him, of being born of God, of obeying his word, of being brought into the divine cellars, of being drunk in a torrent of delight, of running into an odor of his perfumes, of hearing his voice, and entering into the bedroom, and of finding sleep and rest in peace in him”.<Ref>Harmless, William. Mystics. New York: Oxford University Press, 2008. p. 5</ref>

The Western Catholic church has worked hard to contain connection within cloistered monastic walls, but according to Lossky,<ref>Lossky, Vladimir. The Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church. New York: St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press, 2002.</ref> mysticism and mystical experience, specifically union with God, has remained a more "in the open" goal of the Church, something even layman could achieve (p. 19).

Connection is important because, as William James says, they are the foundation from which religion emerges. As Bender notes, practitioners reassert and reinforce this basic "narrative," when they assert that is religious experience which drives them forward towards spiritual practice. <ref>Bender, Courtney. The New Metaphysicals: Spirituality and the American Religious Imagination. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2010.</ref>

John W. Nevin felt that Christianity was "grounded in the living union of the believer with the person of Christ." <ref>Quoted in Hewitt, Glenn A. Regeneration and Morality: A Study of Charles Finney, Charles Hodge, John W. Nevin, and Horace Bushnell. New York: Carlson Publishing, 1991.p. 101. </ref>

Connection is often (always?) initiated via an [[Intent to Connect]] of some sort.

Connection experiences are "pleasing in and of themselves, but they also have been said to eventuate in long term positive changes, such as increased creativity and insight; improved intellectual, emotional, perceptual, and physical functioning; a holistic perception of the world and the self; a sense of objective understanding and wisdom; a naturally arising moral and ethical sense; and an experience of inner peace and freedom" <ref>Havens, R. A. “Approaching Cosmic Consciousnes via Hypnosis.” Journal of Humanistic Psychology 22, no. 1 (1982): 105–16.</ref>

St. Teresa of Avila, a medieval mystic Christian Nun, felt that everybody could have mystical experiences. <ref>St. Teresa of Avila. Interior Castle. Kindle. New York: Dover Publications, 2007. https://amzn.to/2GpC7NG.</ref> Underhill notes everybody is capable of connection: "It is a natural human activity" requiring no special talent or ability.<ref>Underhill, Evelyn. Mysticism: A Study in the Nature and Development of Spiritual Consciousness. New York: Dover Publications, 2002. https://amzn.to/2C91xNY.</ref> [[Contemplative Consciousness]]

Connection leads to expansion of Consciousness into the body, i.e., increased [[Consciousness Quotient]].

The [[LP]] [[Connection Framework]] provides guidance on how to prepare for and facilitate stronger Connection.

[[Awakening]] and improvements in [[Acknowledgment]], [[Atonement]], [[Alignment]], [[Activation]], and [[Ascension]] facilitate stronger connection.

Connections may be characterized along five [[Connection Axes]].

Connection may be facilitated with [[Connection Supplements]] (where legal in your area) and [[Connection Practices]]

The opposite of Connection is [[Disconnection]]. [[Connection Supplements]] enable controlled and metered reconnection.

Think of connection in internet terms. Like your computer/device connects to a website '''server,'' so your little self connects to your [[Self]], [[Highest Self]], or some other monadic location in [The Fabric of Consciousness]]. Make sure you have the right "web" address before you connect.

Connection is the ostensible and overt goal of [[Authentic Spirituality]].

The ability to connect with Consciousness is a natural ability of the [[Physical Unit]]. It is facilitated via proper [[Development]] of the [[Physical Unit]], or when the physical unit is damaged, via the use of [[Connection Supplements]] designed to overcome the psychological and emotional damage of [[Toxic Socialization]]. In this regard, Huxley notes that the ability to connect (what he calls mystical union) is "as all the evidence seems to show, a state which man [sic], as man [sic], has always had it in his power to realize..." ([[PP]]). Further [[Connection]] (what Huxley refers to as "direct awareness of the 'eternally complete consciousness,') is a "possibility occasionally actualized by some human beings at almost any stage of their own personal development, from childhood to old age, and at any period of the race’s history."

Proper development of the physical unit includes a [[Healthy Socialization|socialization]] process, satisfies all [[Seven Essential Needs]], and that teaches, encourages, and facilitates [[Right Action]], [[Right Thought]], and [[Right Environment]].

Connection is thwarted by [[Wrong Thought]], [[Wrong Action]], and [[Wrong Environment]], all of which lead to [[Disjuncture]], [[Disconnection]], and [[Disconnection Pathology]].

Connection may be visually represented with the [[Water Glass Metaphor]].

Some think that connection is the root of all(!) great scientific discoveries. Evidence appears to exist, but is largely forgotten these days.

<blockquote>
Altered states of consciousness have been responsible for all great successful scientific discoveries. Science really has its genesis in the phenomenon of intimate, immediate and even normally inaccessible states of consciousness. Nikola Tesla's induction motor was born early in this century out of a spontaneous vision of incredible exactitude. F. A. Kekule was similarly struck in his discovery of the idea of the benzene ring, which began modern organic chemistry. So much so that he published an account of his ouroboros-type revelation in the 1890 proceedings of the German Chemical Society, ending with the memorable sentences: “As though from a flash of lightning I awoke [and] occupied the rest of the night in working the consequences of the hypothesis .... Let us learn. to dream gentlemen."

Henri Poincare similarly left us a record of his ultraconscious finding of automorphic functions-s0 important in modern mathematics. The discovery of the laster by an American scientist in a visionary experience in a park at dawn is a well-known .twentieth century addition to the evidence.

Finally, the quantum physicist Max Born, in a letter of his of 1967, wrote that he had experienced during his lifetime "perhaps a dozen flashes of ideas which proved to lead to scientifically significant...results.” He compared the quality of his experience: to that of Kekule and added that ".I know for certain that in the few cases where I have discovered something of importance it came like a flash, and a minute before I knew nothing of it” <ref>Muses, Charles, and Arthur M Young, eds. Consciousness and Reality: The Human Pivot Point. New York: Discus Books, 1972. p. 89</ref>
Hierarchy of Needs) is a psychological representation of human needs proposed by Abraham Maslow in a 1943 paper entitled "A Theory of Human Motivation"<ref>Maslow, A. H. “A Theory of Human Motivation.” Psychological Review 50, no. 4 (1943): 370–96</ref>.
==Notes==

Though he did not use that game, a hierarchy of needs was first proposed by Swami Vivekananda in "The Secret Work" in his book Karma Yoga. <ref>Vivekananda, Swami. "The Secret of Work." Collected Works of Swami Vivekananda. Vol. 5. 9 vols. Advaita Ashrama, 2016. https://www.holybooks.com/wp-content/uploads/SWAMI-VIVEKANANDA-COMPLETE-WORKS-Vol-1.pdf</ref>

Maslow first proposed this hierarchy in 1942. "'There is a hierarchy of five sets of goals or purposes or needs which are set in the following order of prepotency. First, satisfaction or gratification of body needs ••• Second, the safety needs ••• Third, love, affection, warmth, acceptance, a place in the group. Fourth, desire for self-esteem, self-respect, self-confidence, for the feeling of strength or adequacy Fifth, self-actualization, self-fulfillment, self -expression, working out of one's own fundamental personality, the fulfillment of its potentialities, the use of its capacities, the tendency to be the most that one is capable of being. In addition, the in~vidual will tend to want and to strive for all the conditions which make these satisfactions possible, e.g., freedom, full information, justice, order, etc." <ref>Maslow. “Preface to Motivation Theory.” Psychosomatic Medicine 5, no. 1 (January 1943): 91.</ref>

Maslow's hierarchy subsequently became a very popular representation of the constellation of human needs<ref>Maslow, A. H. (1971). The Farther Reaches of Human Nature. New York: Viking.</ref><ref>Maslow, A. H. (1994). Religions, Values, and Peak-Experiences. New York: Penguin.</ref><ref>Maslow, A. H. (2012). The "Core-Religious" or "Transcendent" Experience. In J. White (Ed.), The Highest State of Consciousness (pp. 339-350). New York: Doubleday. </ref>

Note, in his original article, Maslow proposed '''two''' separate hierarchies, the [[[Hierarchy of Basic Needs]] and the [[Hierarchy of Cognitive Needs]].

The Hierarchy of Basic Needs eventually came to include the following six need sets.

[[Image:correctedbasicneeds1.png|350px|right|Modified Hierarchy]]

* [[Physiological Needs]],
* [[Safety Needs]],
* [[Love Needs]],
* [[Esteem Needs]]/Power<ref>I would define power as the feeling of self respect." Maslow, Abraham. “Eupsychia—The Good Society.” Journal of Humanistic Psychology 1, no. 2 (1961): p. 2.</ref>
* [[Self-Actualization]] needs
* [[Transcendence Needs]] (added 1963).

According to Maslow, human needs (even the need for love and self-esteem) are '''biological'''. As he noted, "If these needs are not fulfilled, pathology results" (Maslow, 1969, p. 3). On the other hand, when basic needs are fulfilled, then "...a different picture emerges. There are people who do feel loved and who are able to love, who do feel safe and secure and who do feel respected and who do have self-respect. If you study these people and ask what motivates them, you find yourself in another realm. This realm is what I have to call transhumanistic, meaning that which motivates, gratifies, and activates the fortunate, developed, self-actualizing person. These people are motivated by something beyond the basic needs." <Ref>Maslow, A. H. (1969). The farther reaches of human nature. Journal of Transpersonal Psychology, 1(1). p. 3. </ref>

'''Prepotency''': "Degrees of relative satisjaction.-So far, our theoretical discussion may have given the impression that these five sets of needs are somehow in a step-wise, ali-or-none relatio:nships to each other. We have spoken in such terms as the following: "Oone need is satisfied, then another emerges." This statement might give the false impression that a need must be satisfied 100 per cent before the next need emerges. In actual fact, most members of our society who are normal, are partially satisfied in all their basic needs and partially unsatisfied in all their basic needs at the same time. A more realistic description of the hierarchy would be in terms of decreasing percentages of satisfaction as we go up the hierarchy of prepotency. For instance, if I may assign arbitrary figures for the sake of illustration, it is as if the average citizen is satisfied perhaps 85 per cent in his physiological needs, 70 per cent in his safety needs, so per cent in his love needs, 40 per cent in his self-esteem needs, and IO per· cent in his selfactualization needs.(Maslow, 1943, pp. 388-9)"

'''Psychopathology''': Maslow repeated often the importance of satisfying all human needs. Maslow said that the health, happiness, and well being of the individual physical unit were predicated on proper satisfaction of these needs. Failure to satisfy the needs of the physical unit led to ill health, neurosis, even psychosis, and even psychopath. As he notes, "The so-called 'psychopathic personality' is another example of permanent loss of the love needs. These are people who, according to the best data available (9), have been starved for love in the earliest months of their lives and have simply lost forever the desire and the ability to give and to receive affection". (Maslow, 1943, p. 386). A considerable amount of space is given in Maslow's 1943 paper to outlining the roots of psychopathology in the subversion of human needs.

'''Lightning Path''': Concepts in red are Lightning Path reconceptualizations. The need for (self) esteem is reconceptualized as the need for power and efficacy (i.e. control) of one's personal world. Observation of children supports this. A child's evaluation of self, and their sense of reputation and prestige, is predicated on their mastery of the environment, and the parental and social feedback they receive. Children are driven (by the biological imperatives of their physical unit, and the wishes and desires of their [[Resident Monadic Consciousness]]to become masterful at something that is important to them. Whether they are powerful depends on their eventual ability to master the world. Whether they feel powerful depends on the social feedback they receive.

Sosteric (SOA1) conceptualizes the need for transcendence (a confused and confusing concept) as the need for [[connection]] to [[The Fabric of Consciousness]]. The culmination/goal of the human healthy and authentic human developmental is connection with [[Consciousness]].

The satisfaction of basic and cognitive human needs is the base upon which connection occurs.

'''Prepotent?''' Maslow suggested needs were prepotent, meaning that lower needs had to be satisfied before higher needs came into play. Many subsequent authors have assumed a ridged prepotency, but in fact Maslow had a flexible and probabilistic understanding of how needs emerge and were satisfied. In other words, Maslow recognized there was variation in the way needs were satisfied, and that the hierarchy was not ridged and fixed but flexible and flud (Maslow, 1943: 386-89).

===Speculating the Oversight===

Since the 1943 publication of Maslow's seminal paper, his basic needs hierarchy has seen intensive use both in professional psychological circles, and amongst the general public. However, his cognitive needs hierarchy has been ignored and largely absent from scholarly and lay discussions. Discussion that do exist incorporate "cognitive needs" are inadequate. They are limited in both scope and understanding, erroneously suggest that Maslow added cognitive needs only much later, or they mistakenly include the cognitive needs within Maslow's basic hierarchy. It is interesting to speculate about the glaring abscence of a cognitive needs hierarchy from the genral psychological corpus (both lay and professional).

==Meta Needs==

In addition to '''basic needs''' and '''cognitive needs''', Maslow proposed a third hierarchy of needs known as '''Meta needs''' (also known as growth needs) (Maslow, 1967) . According to Maslow these needs typically only emerged after the basic needs of the organism where met, and as an individual began to self-actualize and finally transcended. People motivated by metaneeds where motivated by truth, beauty, justice, goodness, neatness, efficiency, love, honestly, innocence, orderliness, growth, authenticity, serenity, peacefulness and so on (Maslow,1967: 101). Maslow believed that metaneeds were rooted in the biological apparatus of the organism (Maslow, 1967).

On the LP we fold metaneeds into the need for [[Alignment]] and [[Connection]], two of the [[Seven Essential Needs]].
Buddha, a person who has awakened...<ref> Wallis, Glenn. Basic Teachings of the Buddha. New York: The Modern Library, 2007.</ref>

The Buddha's teaching are embodied. "The Buddha will ask you to “go against the flow” and resist this human proclivity. He will want to remind you that “it is within this six-foot body, with its mind and its concepts” that he realized and subsequently declared the teachings (''Samyuttanikya'' 1.2.26). Can we take a clear-eyed view of the Buddha as a fully embodied ''ordinary'' human being, as depicted in this statement? It may turn out that such a view is actually ''necessary'' for an understanding of his teachings."<ref>Wallis, Glenn. ''Basic Teachings of the Buddha''. New York: The Modern Library, 2007.</ref>

==Quotes==

"Listen! The deathless has been realized. I will instruct you. I will teach you the way. Practicing as instructed, by realizing for yourselves here and now through direct insight, you will soon enter on and dwell in the ultimate refuge of the higher life, for the sake of which people properly go from their home into homelessness."<ref> Wallis, Glenn. Basic Teachings of the Buddha. New York: The Modern Library, 2007.</ref>

An ascetic named Upaka saw me on the road between Gayimage and the place of my awakening, and, on seeing me, spoke to me as follows. “Your faculties are clear, brother. Your complexion is pure and bright. Under whose supervision have you become a seeker? Who is your teacher? Whose teachings do you accept?” When this was said, I replied to Upaka in verse.

“Master of all,
knower of all, am I.
Unstained among
the things of the world,
I abandon all.
With the withering of craving,
I am liberated.
Having realized this condition
completely on my own
to whom should I point as a teacher?
“I have no teacher;
a person like me cannot be found.
In this world with its resplendent beings,
I have no equal.
“For, in this world,
I am highly accomplished.
I am the teacher supreme.
I, alone, am fully and soundly awakened.
Cooled am I, and quenched.
“To set in motion
the wheel of teaching
I am going to the city of Kasi.
In a world become blind,
I beat the drum of the deathless.”<ref> Wallis, Glenn. Basic Teachings of the Buddha. New York: The Modern Library, 2007.</ref>

A practical concern with healing and health

"Go, wander for the welfare of the human multitude, for the happiness of the human multitude, out of compassion for the world, for the benefit, the good, and the happiness of people and resplendent beings. Let no two of you go in the same direction. Teach both the meaning and the idiom of the dhamma, which is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end. Manifest the completely fulfilled and perfectly purified life of training. There are people who have but little dust in their eyes, who are falling away because they have not heard of the way (dhamma). They will understand the teachings (dhamma). I, too, will go—to Senanigama in Uruvela—to teach the dhamma. (Samyuttanikaya 1.4.5)"

Exploitatives techniques constitute one of three aspects of the [[Mode of Exploitation]]. Other aspects include the [[Mechanisms of Force]] and [[Ideological Institutions]]. <ref>Ruyle, Eugene E. “Mode of Production and Mode of Exploitation: The Mechanical and the Dialectical.” Dialectical Anthropology 1, no. 1 (1975): 7–23. https://doi.org/10.1007/bf00244565. p. 11</ref>

The exploitation of the masses is facilitated and enabled by a [[Toxic Socialization]] process that damages and indoctrinates the individual. Toxic Socialization is created and implemented by [[Ideological Institutions]].
'''Intellectualization''' is an [[Awareness Reduction Mechanisms]] that the [[Bodily Ego]] uses to avoid uncomfortable confrontation with reality. Intellectualization involves engrossing oneself in the cognitive/intellectuals aspects of a situation to the point where you completely disregard the uncomfortable emotional aspects that are involved. </blockquote>
==Notes==

Intellectualization is a form of informational positioning in which one concentrates on the intellectual components of a situation so as to distance oneself emotionally. For example, an individual who has experienced sexual assault seeks information on other cases and the psychology of rapists and victims. The individual takes self-defence classes in order to feel safer rather than directly addressing the psychological and emotional issues. Or, a pedophile having sex with 12-year-old intellectualizes by showing statistics that children legally marry adult men in some cultures.
==Notes==

An instantiated point of Self Awareness is known, in gnostic traditions, as a [[Monad]]. Intensification of Consciousness creates [[Monadic Consciousness]].

Intensification of Consciousness to the point of [[Instantiation]] may be referred to as [[First Birth]].

The process of intensification is easily understood visually. Think of a large empty room full of mist. The mist is The Fabric of Consciousness. Now imagine the mist coalescing and thickening into a single intense spot. Imagine that at a certain point the mist gets dense enough and then imagine a single spot "lightning up" as a pinpoint of [[Light]] (i.e. a [[Star]]). The "star" that appears is the self-aware [[Monad]].
