Under conditions of Chronic Toxicity, toxic Substance Attachments (a.k.a. substance addictions), Behavioural Attachments (a.k.a. behavioural addictions), and Relationship Attachments (i.e. co-dependency) can develop. Any substance, activity, or technology that can trigger a "dopamine hit" can cause a toxic attachment. </blockquote>
Notes
Toxic attachments may be active, inactive, or broken. An active attachment is an attachment which the individual currently attempts to service. An inactive attachment is an attachment that is controlled, but for which neurological vestiges remain. That is, individuals may "crave" especially during times of discomfort and distress. A broken attachment is an attachment that is unlearned and for which no neurological vestiges remain.

Toxic attachment is often identified in the spiritual literature as an obstacle to Connection. It is identified as "passion for transient objects"attachment to

Potentially "addictive" substances/activities -> Heroine, cocaine, running, shopping, Facebook/social media use, masturbation, sex, etc.

Chronic emotional and psychological anguish can make you susceptible to addiction. This is because addictive substances give your brain much needed "pleasure" fixes. When you lack the hugs, kisses, and positive nurturing support all humans desperately need, you find substances that can give you the "hits" your Physical Unit desperately needs.

Toxic attachment, (whether it is to alcohol, shopping, money, etc.) can control your thoughts and govern your daily actions. Addiction causes you, among other things, to waste psychological and emotional energy on Addiction Defenses.

We lose valuable time defending our addiction, that could be used for healing and connection and instead waste in on our addictive behaviors. We defend our addictions by covering it up, by spending valuable time “servicing” the addiction, etc. Addictions can also directly undermine your body’s ability to connect. You can’t be properly connected while stupefying yourself with alcohol.

It is important to note that the old world is not a "natural" world in the sense that it is outcome of natural selection or cosmic prerogative. Rather, the old world (like all worlds) is a designed world. It is the result of a conscious application of creative principles and techniques developed, arrayed, and aligned for specific purposes. In the case of the Old World, that purpose is aggrandizement of a few, and global enslavement for the rest.

The pyramid is sometimes represented with an eye at the top. The eye symbolizes the notion that it is only the social class at the very top which that the complete truth about the world, which his that that we are all enslaved by a specific Regime of Accumulation.

Parenthetically, "Novus Ordo Seclorum" means new order of the ages. This refers to the fact that the Regime of Accumulation implemented in the United States would be different than the Feudal/European version, thus representing a "new world order" or new ROA. Despite being "new," however, the U.S. system is still a very effective ROA.

In the graphic below, the pyramid is represented in a critical way, showing how the various social classes benefit from, are complicit in, and work to reproduce, The System.
Notes
The Flow emerges from three sources, the Bodily Ego, the Spiritual Ego, or some other location within The Fabric of Consciousness.

A goal of healthy human development is to ensure the Bodily Ego is healthy and strong enough so that it can connect with, vet, and integrate the Flow that emerges from sources outside the Bodily Ego.

Old Energy Archetypes corrupt and diminish The Flow, while New Energy Archetypes purify and enhance.

The Flow is enhanced during Connection Experiences when The Pipe is wide open and the Bodily Ego is more fully connected to the Spiritual Ego.

The diminishing and destructive effect of old energy archetypes are enhanced during connection.

The enhanced flow that occurs during connection, plus the presence of old energy archetypes, plus a damaged psyche and diminished self-esteem, can lead to Connection Pathology. It is important therefore that when one practices connection, one also works to heal the psyche and remove old energy archetypes. Failure to do so may lead to spiritual trauma, connection pathology, and (in rare cases) permanent psychological damage.
<blockquote class="definition">Transpersonal psychology is both a Healing Framework and a Connection Framework. It is a school of psychology that studies the transpersonal, transcendent, or spiritual aspects of the human experience. Transpersonal psychology was first announced and defined with the publication of The Journal of Transpersonal Psychology, in 1969. </blockquote>

Notes
Guided by the work of psychologists like Abraham Maslow, S. Groff, Anthony Sutich and others, this perspective was, according to the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology website, "founded on a commitment to open-ended inquiry, experiential and empirical validation, and a values-oriented approach to human experience." Lajore and Shapiro (1992: 91) describe transpersonal psychology as "the study of humanity’s highest potential, and with the recognition, understanding, and realization of unitive, spiritual, and transcendent states of consciousness" (Lajore and Shapiro, 1992:91). Transpersonal psychologists are interested in “spiritual experiences, mystical states of consciousness, mindfulness and meditative practices, shamanic states, ritual, the overlap of spiritual experiences with disturbed states such as psychosis and depression… the transpersonal dimensions of interpersonal relationships” (David, 2000), spiritual self-development, Peak Experiences (Maslow, 1971), entheogen usage (Grof, 1973), and mystical experiences of living.

Perhaps more than any other area of psychology, Transpersonal psychology is culturally and theoretically diverse. Practitioners (David, 2000) cite influences ranging from western and eastern mystical systems, to shamanic systems and practice to the use of Entheogens as a significant precursor and aid to the development of their insight and practice.

Transpersonal Psychology and Entheogens
In 1973 Stanislav Grof (1973) cited the therapeutic application of entheogens as a theoretical and experimental precursor to Transpersonal psychology. His entire paper, entitled Theoretical and Empirical Basis of Transpersonal Psychology and Psychotherapy: Observations from LSD Research used his extensive clinical and therapeutic research with entheogens to provide theoretical and empirical support for transpersonal psychology. As Grof himself notes, such luminaries as Abraham Maslow, Anthony Sutich, Jim Fadiman, and Victor Frankl “all agreed that observations related to the use of psychedelic substances in psychotheraphy (and to a certain degree those related to their abuse by the general population) are of utmost relevance for personality theory and clearly demonstrate the need for a new discipline.” (Groft, 1973: 16).

Spiritual Emergence
The term Spiritual Emergence was coined by Stanislav and Christina Grof (1989) in order to describe a gradual unfoldment of spirituality in a person's life. In cases where this spiritual unfoldment is intensified, uncontrolled, rapid, and unguided emergence may lead to a state of emergency. Spiritual emergencies, which are caused by spontaneous Crown Activation, and which can be elicited using various technologies of activation, will occur with increasing frequency in the decades ahead. Spiritual emergencies can cause significant disruptions in psychological, social and occupational functioning.
Current psychological approaches are ill-equipped to understand and handle these emergencies. Spiritual emergencies are often misdiagnosed as neurotic or psychotic episodes, and Crown Stupification is often the only way traditional psychology, psychiatry, and medicine can control and treat the problem.

<blockquote class"definition">
A Second Order Translation is a translation derived not from a direct translation of a source language, but a translation derived from an already established translation. A second order translation is an attempt to increase the legibility of a sacred text by updating concepts and grammar to modern standards. </blockquote>

Notes
Not sure if the SOT is a thing that already exists.

A SOT is useful when a first-order translation does not translate grammar, as is the case with many translations from Sanskrit texts into English. The SOT brings additional clarity to an original text.

Doing a SOT introduces a possible source of error and bias. However, by clarifying the text is may also help remove much understanding and also facilitate dialogue.
<blockquote class="definition">
A Cognitive Wall is an intellectual wall between you and an idea that prevents you from connecting with/understanding the idea.
</blockquote>
Notes
We implement a cognitive wall for emotional reasons, like low self-esteem (we erect the wall because we are afraid that if we try to understand, we won't), avoidance of painful awareness (we don't want to read a book on pedophiles because we are one, or we know one), because we reject something outright (atheists have a cognitive wall when it comes to discussions of God), or because we are indoctrinated to reject (Christians are indoctrinated to reject the tarot), etc.

You will know you have a cognitive wall if you pick up a normal book and simply cannot access the meaning of the words on the page. You will see the words, you will read them, but you will not be able to understand them, even when they are simple and straightforward. Cognitively, you will withdraw to another space. As you drift away, the words will lose all meaning.

Gandhi was practiced an adept at listing to his "inner voice." As he says, "as I had long since taught myself to follow the inner voice. I delighted in submitting to it. To act against it would be difficult and painful to me.

Edward Carpenter notes that "to almost all mankind flashes (or glimmers) of the same thing come in those moments of exaltation or intuition which form the basis of religion, art, literature, and much even of practical life.

Intuitive glimmerings often lead to great connection experiences, and thus perhaps may be considered Push Experiences. St. Teresa of Avila notes that sometimes, God (read Consciousness) gives "consolations, favours and emotions13 which begin to move their desires, and occasionally even brings them to a state of contemplation..." </blockquote>

Going to be examining mystical experience.

Notes that "discordant inner life," "melancholy," "exalted emotional sensibility," even mental pathology as precedents of Connection Experience. Uses the example of George Fox and says he was a "psychopath or detraque of the deepest dye." Spends some time arguing that, despite what some might think, these are "realities" that must be accepted, but that this shouldn't lead us to totally dismiss religion or religious experience as so much mental pathology, stupidity, or sexual/instinctual immaturity. Suggests we should move beyond the "simpleminded system" of though he calls Medical Materialism and focus not so much on the "origins of mystical experience" but on the outcomes of mystical experience.

Points out that just because there's an organic cause for a "religious state of mind" doesn't mean it doesn't have religious significance. Points out that just because sometimes there is madness, doesn't mean we should completely dismiss, because clearly it is more than just that.

<blockquote class="quotation">The plain truth is that to interpret religion one must in the end look at the immediate content of the religious consciousness. The moment one does this, one sees how wholly disconnected it is in the main from the content of the sexual consciousness.
</blockquote>

If we are going to examine religious/spiritual things, we should also have criteria beyond personal bias and insensitivity. He suggests "Immediate luminousness, in short, philosophical reasonableness, and "moral helpfulness" as "the only available criteria.:

Judge "religious life by its results exclusively" and not by the "bugaboo of morbid origin."

End by suggesting that we should still focus on pathology, if relevant because of a) curiosity and b) the expanded understanding examinatino of "insane conditions" would provide.

"If there were such a thing as inspiration from a higher realm, it might well be that the neurotic temperament would furnish the chief condition of the requisite receptivity. And having said thus much, I think that I may let the matter of religion and neuroticism drop."

Lecture II Circumscription of the Topic
The problem of defining what religion is. Its complex, hard to pin down, "the very fact that they are so many and so different from one another is enough to prove that the word “religion” cannot stand for any single principle or essence, but is rather a collective name." There is no "essence" but multiple characteristics

Divides religion into an Institutional Religion and a Personal Religion. James will focus on Personal Religion.

Notes that some people might believe personal religion to be inferior to Institutional Religion, but suggests the opposite is in fact the case

<blockquote class="quotation"> Churches, when once established, live at second-hand upon tradition; but the FOUNDERS of every church owed their power originally to the fact of their direct personal communion with the divine. Not only the superhuman founders, the Christ, the Buddha, Mahomet, but all the originators of Christian sects have been in this case;—so personal religion should still seem the primordial thing, even to those who continue to esteem it incomplete. </blockquote>

Defines religion as "THE FEELINGS, ACTS, AND EXPERIENCES OF INDIVIDUAL MEN IN THEIR SOLITUDE, SO FAR AS THEY APPREHEND THEMSELVES TO STAND IN RELATION TO WHATEVER THEY MAY CONSIDER THE DIVINE." Goes on to twiddle with the definition and understanding, the end result of which doesn't really contribute to our understanding of religion, but in fact, considerably muddies the waters.

Lecture III The Reality of the Unseen
An attempt to understand mystical experience, not to dismiss but to simply note these things exist and are a natural feature of the human body and human experience.

"This absolute determinability of our mind by abstractions is one of the cardinal facts in our human constitution."

James recounts dozens of Connection Experiencess ranging from Intuitive Glimmerings to Illuminations through active Intramonadic Communication

IN addition to efforts to make this card about relationships between a man and a women (binary gender), this also perpetuates Zoroastrian thinking. "Finally, the Lovers card encourages you to unify dual forces. You can bring together two parts that are seemingly in opposition to one another and create something that is ‘whole’, unified and harmonious. Sexist stereotypes: "The male figure in the card is the mind and rationality. The female figure is the heart and emotion."

Fool in school: "The Lovers card may also be understood alongside key ideas from the philosopher and theologian Søren Kierkegaard: we face an existential choice between two life paths, either one willfully hedonistic or one grounded in our sense of ethical duty."

Christian morality: "The philosophical component of the card centers around choice: there is duality or a decision to be made, and it is a choice between vice and virtue, an ethical quandary. The burning tree behind the man, with twelve glowing flames, is considered to be the Tree of Life, while the fruit-bearing tree behind the female is the Tree of Knowledge.30 Its fruits represent sexuality— fornication, desire, and temptation of the physical senses, which lead to human suffering.31 The Tree of Knowledge symbolizes the desire for sensation. Thus, the Tree of Knowledge represents the primordial choice: to eat of the fruit and know sexuality, thus knowing suffering, or to ascend up the Tree of Life toward God."

Creation of INDEPENDENT INDIVIDUAL disconnected from family. "The Lovers symbolises the first decision which must be made unaided by the traveller on his journey through life. The youth is caught in the dilemma of having to choose between loyalty to his mother and desire for his beloved, between traditional authority and independent action. This is an important stage in the development of individuality; the stage at which the personality becomes an entity separate and apart from its origins."

Recovery
Pollack makes this about adolescent sexual drive and instincts, and also reproduces the classic binary gender schema, making it "progressive" by saying we all have elements of both genders within.

Pollack suggests the card is about a choice between light and dark, variously defined as the choice between giving in to "dark" urges, and leading a more proper life, a choice between an "outer path" (exoteric) and inner path of the occultist. A choice between developmental stagnation and independent development. Pollack also points to individuation.

"Therefore, the traditional version of trump 6 represents adolescence. Not only does sexuality emerge at this time but also intellectual and moral independence. Cards 3, 4 and 5 represented us as shaped by the great forces of nature, society, and parents. In card 6 the individual emerges, a true personality with its own ideas and purposes, able to make important choices based, not on parental orders, but on its own assessment of desires and responsibilities."
It simultaneously refers both to the formative aspect of Divine Consciousness (i.e. shakti/शक्ति) and Mirra Alfassa (21 February 1878 – 17 November 1973), an individual who functioned as an Earthly channel/expression of the supreme formative (mahashzakti/महाशक्ति) aspect of Consciousness.
Notes
Sri Aurobindo characterizes mahashakti/महाशक्ति as the Divine Mother. In the New Age movement महाशक्ति is depersonalized to be the sacred feminine. In Chinese philosophy mahashakti is yin. On the Lightning Path, mahashakti is characterized as the formative principle of Consciousness (BOLIFE).

Sri Aurobindo notes that the goal of spiritual is to fully express mahashakti. "The last stage of this perfection will come when you are completely identified with the Divine Mother and feel yourself to be no longer another and seperate being...but truly a child and eternal portin of her consciousness and force." (Aurobindo, 2013: 25).

Notes
Steering emotions can be positive or negative. Positive steering emotions are emotions like satisfaction, happiness, joy, rapture, and bliss. Negative steering emotions are emotions like guilt, shame, and regret.
Negative steering emotions help identify problem spots and can also help guide the individual towards Alignment, health, and stronger Connection.

Positive steering emotions help identify areas of strengths, things that you should be doing and that represent authentic moves towards Alignment and Connection

Steering emotions are primarily useful while the individual remains disconnected from Consciousness. When an individual is fully (or even partially connected), alignment is determined noetically, i.e. by a strong internal knowing.

Steering emotions work by encouraging and/or discouraging a physical unit from certain actions and behaviors. An individual who feels happiness when working a specific job, engaging a specific task, or existing in a certain way can feel confident their actions are aligned. An individual feeling guilt and shame may feel confident that they are doing or thinking something that is out of alignment with higher Monadic Consciousness.

Steering emotions only work if an individual physical unit is "listening" to their body's emotions. If an individual has been trained not to listen (for example by a toxic gender socialization process that discourages boys from having authentic emotions), or if they have been trained to misinterpret said emotions (perhaps because of Hollywood style manipulation and redefinition of emotions), steering does not work.

An 18th century Christian mystic and scientist by the name of Emanuel Swedenborg noted the reality and significance of these “emotive communications.” He called them “signs” and said that he felt “assured his thoughts were on the right track when he experienced what he called “a sign’:’…a certain cheering light and joyful flash…that darts through some sacred temple of the brain” George F. Dole and Robert H. Kirven, A Scientist Explores Spirit: A Biography of Emanuel Swedenborg (Pennsylvania: Chrysalis books, 1997) p. 34.

Einstein has a dim awareness of steering emotions when he says "One never goes wrong following his feelings. I don't mean emotions, I mean feeling, for feeling and intuition are one." (Hermanns, 1983: np)
Projection is a psychological mechanism that the Bodily Ego uses to avoid uncomfortable confrontation with one's own guilt and shame, anger and resentment. When we project, we project our own Sins onto others.</blockquote>
Awareness Reduction Mechanisms >

Notes
Projection also involves a redirection and distortion of reality and self, a redirection of emotions, thoughts, and actions, but in this case, we project our trauma and disjuncture onto others. Projection is an ARM whereby we reduce awareness of things we find unacceptable in ourselves by focusing our attention on these characteristics in others. For example, an individual angry over sexual assault, but unable to properly express and feeling guilty about feeling angry may project that anger onto others, seeing others as angry and hateful, rather than owning their own emotions.
Or, an abusive spouse may, when confronted with that abuse, project onto the other person. If my partner comes up to me and says that my actions are abusive, I may project onto her and say, “Ya, but you’re abusive as well.” I may rationalize and divert attention from my own abusive behaviours by “digging up” things she has done in the past. Digging up things she did to me in the past allows me to rationalize and deny my current behaviour, and divert attention to hers. When I do this, it is because I am feeling shameful and guilty over my actions, and I do not want to admit it to myself, or her. Of course, if I do this, I am not dealing with my own disjunctive actions. If I am not dealing with my disjunctive actions, my guilt and shame will just grow deep inside me.
Projection is a common tactic used in arguments with intimate partners and other family members. When families are trying to discuss issues, projections often end up flying back and forth like arrows in an epic battle. It is not hard to understand why projection is such a common ARM in families. Parents, and later their adolescent and adult children, use copious quantities of guilt and shame to control behaviour. Children and adolescents who are subjected to this learn to deny, distort, react, sublimate, and project just so they do not have to deal with guilt and shame. For example, my mother used guilt and shame all the time, whenever I did something she thought was wrong. My mother used to make my brother and I stand in a corner for long periods, just to make sure.
This behaviour of projection happens in the social world. You can be a free thinker as long as you do not challenge the status quo. If you do challenge, those in positions of authority will undermine you, exclude you, publicly ridicule and shame you, or worse, vilify you.

Understand, guilt and shame are painful, and for a child, especially so. As a child, being shamed did not teach me to never make mistakes. Humans are always making mistakes so eliminating mistakes is impossible. Instead, being shamed as a child taught me never admit my mistakes. Nobody wants to feel guilt and shame and so we deny, distort, react, sublimate, and project so we do not have to. The use of all ARMs is particularly prominent in families, even those you might consider “healthy,” because within families is where guilt and shame are deployed the most freely. When you think about it, it is your parents, and later your siblings, that treat you the worst. Many parents still hit their kids and few think twice about screaming and invoking shame. When we punished for making mistakes, we learn never to admit them.
The Structure of Consciousness is the interrelation of egoic elements that make up the complex entity that is Consciousness.</blockquote>

Notes
The LP conceives of the Structure of Consciousness as a Tree of Consciousness. Other conceptions (to be added) are possible.

"Bön shamans, like the pau themselves, speak of two souls or soul parts, the la and the saug or tshé.12 As the full name of the “soul calling” ritual indicates, la kuk tshé kuk, the two souls are interrelated and figure in the healing. Saug means life and is also the “breath soul.” It is inseparable from the body. It flows in the breath, has its seat in the heart, but penetrates throughout the body. It is the life-force spirit within us that opposes death and, after death, seeks rebirth. When it is weakened, our resistance to death is weakened, and consequently, our life is shortened (Nebesky-Wojkowitz 1993, 493; Baumer 2002, 49–50; Stein 1972, 232; Tucci 1988, 192–193). Here too the weakness of the soul is the result of a loss of nu shug, which supplies vital energy to the saug." and even people with mental illness can experience significant experiences, and even relatively permanent connection. Assuming an individual is being honest and is not engaged in a fanciful construction, a connection experience (or two, or three, etc.) indicates only that a connection experience has occurred. It cannot be used to verify the emotional or mental health of an individual, nor can it be used as an indication that an individual is spiritually knowledgeable or wise.
<blockquote class="definition">Reincarnation is the process of rebirth whereby an individual Spiritual Ego takes up a presence in a newly created Physical Unit. </blockquote>

Notes
Belief in reincarnation is common throughout the world. As Irwin points out "The pervasiveness of rebirth accounts collectively challenges the minority views of materialist ideologues when brought into alignment with all the various strands of evidence that contribute to a transphysical model of human survival. While no one source may provide a convincing argument in favor of post-mortem life and rebirth, together all sources provide a strong collective body of evidence supporting the plausibility of survival as a valid theory, currently held by a majority of human beings"

A convincing review of Irwin's research is provided by Tucker
Plato has a theory of rebirth

Belief in reincarnation is common in various American religious traditions

"We do believe in life after death. The many deities and spirits come from that belief. We return in the form of animals, trees, birds, spirits and other forms. We are part of the whole. We are the whole. We are a part of the spirit world now. We will be a part of it in the future. We have always been a part of it ... all things are one, and all life is one in one circle of time. Paiute Medicine Man (Toombs 1991)"

"For the ancestors, who are returning to the visible world for the first, second, or third time, birth is a transitional stage that connotes one’s reemergence into the visible reality from the invisible. It is simply a stage in the ongoing cycle of life. The ancestors, however, are actually said to be reincarnated in the form of newborn babies. Therefore, they require the birthing process as a means through which their immortality is sustained and continued. Birthing is one of the vehicles through which the ancestors forever maintain a link to the visible world and become visible again themselves."
Rationalization is an Awareness Reduction Mechanisms that the Bodily Ego uses to avoid the guilt and shame that comes from engaging in unaligned and disjunctive behaviours. Rationalization involves the deployment of justification to excuse uncomfortable ideas, actions, or realities.</blockquote>
Notes
An individual will rationalize their exploitation of child labour, for example, by saying things like "It helps their economy or their family," effectively suppressing the reality of their exploitation by covering it over with a rationalized veneer.

Rationalization occurs when we justify and make excuses for things we have done, or things we have experienced. Rationalization is a common defence response when people are being asked to remember and acknowledge their behaviour. It happens in domestic life and in the corporate world. In addition to denying, Tim Cook, the Apple CEO, made excuses for his company’s tax avoidance. He rationalized his companies practices, saying things like “we pay all the taxes we owe” and that they have always done it that way. Similarly, parents who abuse their children and who find, as the children grow up, simple denial ineffective will make excuses and come up with rationalizations. They will say, “I did the best I could” or you were a “difficult” child or whatever. The excuses that people come up with are legion.

A parent rationalizes chronic emotional, psychological, or physical assault of their own children by saying "It builds character," or "Spare the rod and spoil the child."

ARMs are invoked to handle the pain and anguish of disjuncture and trauma. You can rationalize your own trauma to yourself. When you do that, it helps you put the memories back on the shelf. Rather than remember and process the full painful trauma of an abusive childhood, for example, adults will tell themselves things like their toxic experiences made them stronger, or built up their character, or made them what they are today. When we rationalize our own trauma, we give ourselves the power to press the memories back down so we do not have to experience and deal with the pain. Of course, doing that does not solve any of your issues. If you want to properly process and heal, you have to remember and process the trauma. There is no other way.

Treatement
Rationalizations often cover up fear, anxiety, guilt, and shame. Discover the client's reasons for rationalization. Are they afraid of reprisal? Are the actions out of alignment? Does honest treatment bring guilt and shame? Help them process their emotions, forgive their past actions, and change their behaviour in a way that doesn't require them to rationalize.

The Body is the lowest (in terms of vibratory frequencies) "level" of Creation. The Body is what you see when you open your eyes in a Physical Unit.

It is important to understand that Consciousness embraces and enters into The Body at all levels of aggregation, although the most varied, interesting, self aware, and useful expressions of consciousness occur within those aspects of The Body that are able to support full expression of Consciousness, i.e. bodies which can support life.
