Notes

Edward Carpenter suggests that Self Consciousness is an evolutionary stage between Simple Consciousness and Cosmic Consciousness, suggesting that in stage humanity is in "rodent stage." nevertheless, he simultaneously recognizes this stage as a state of Disconnection.

All the universe exists, and is in this third state of consciousness; but we in the strange condition of illusion which belongs to the second stage—exiles from the Eden-garden, persuaded of the separateness of our individual selves, and unable to enter into true knowledge—are content to gnaw off tiny particles, which we call thoughts, from the great Reality.[1]
